has anyone drilled & installed these marine cup in the top of the dash??

I've thought about drilling the hole, running the drill in reverse, so as not to crack the dash

Hubby mounted this great cup holder for me. He bought it at a boat shop. When in use, you have your choice of a small or large top holding ring. (Water bottles or coffee cup) When you don't need it, the whole thing folds up flat against the wall.

There are several styles like this. The one I got on Amazon is nicer with a spring tension holder. The one from CW has click type compression and does hole water bottles as well. The DW requires two, one for travel mug and one for water. When closed up they look the same.

What is behind the wall when you drilled into it? Tried the other day to mount similar style under drivers window, above plastic armrest/switches and the drill bit, dull, didn't want to go much more than about a 1/16". Didn't want to force it so quit right there.

Don't know. I used self tapping screws used for screwing together metal studs. Click image for larger version

I used the small screws that came with the ones i bought. Also came with double sided sticky tape but ive found the screws hold better. Was hard as the material seemed to be sheet metal. But with enough speed and pressure they threaded into it no problem. Screws were very short that came with it.

Good info guys, thanks! I tried to use short brass wood screws to no avail. Screws that came with the cup holders were to long I thought, maybe 3/4 to 1 inch. Think I'll re-try with screws that Jersey used.

Not knowing the size of the ruler (inches, centimeters, etc.) I can only guess that the screws are about a half inch? (If each graduation is an 8th)
