Entry step light On/Off switch addition

I want to be able to have the amber light that comes on when the entry door is open and turns off when closed (appears to be on a timer) be controlled by a switch so that I can manually turn the switch on or off.

The light has a male and female connector that when connected to each other powers the light. If this connection is no longer used and 12v power thru a switch is wired directly to the light lead connector will not using the factory light power lead effect the function of the steps in any way?
