Fuel Mileage while towing
I'm wondering if I have something going on with my 2015 30DS... towing a 2-dr Jeep Wrangler, I got 6.25 mpg going over the Coastal Range here in Oregon....
Speed limits everywhere 45 - 55 mph...
The fuel consumption is not good.
I know there are a lot of factors... and I really don't care but I'm routing my summer trip coming up and would like to not have to stop all the time...
It's only about 60 to 90 miles (depending on which part of the coast we go to) one way but it's weird to be looking at a half tank after not being that far away from home...
This summer's trip will be roughly 2000 miles... @6.5mpg I'm looking at 308 gallons and at $3.00 / gal... I could be looking at $924 for the trip....
Just wondering what others are getting...
Thanks
Todd

You getting about the same mileage as we do. Which we tow a Minivan on a dolly, which is at least 5,000 lbs total. I usually budget 6 mpg to be safe when planning trips. And we drive at about 62-65 mph. It is what it is I guess. Some say they get 8 mpg, but we've never seen that, even empty.

I don't think mine would get 8 if I turned the motor off and coasted....
I have a buddy with a class C... he gets about 9.5 he says... same motor and everything. He isn't as long and not as tall but I'd think it would weigh about the same....
He might be exaggerating somewhat...

I've gotten anywhere between 7.5 and 9mpg towing a jeep yj. This is up and down the mountains of Colorado. I'd do anything to be on flat land for a whole tank of gas!
I'm a light foot but 6.5 seems low to me.

Wow $3.00 a gal!!!!!. We are at $1.38 in Va. But when we are on the road we seem to stay in the east so we tow aroun 7 mpg, not a lot of mountains.

Mine is the same mileage, I don't know how long your summer vacation is but remember its cheaper then a motel every night and your sleeping in your own bed.

With the Tundra pulling a 23' travel trailer at around 6000lbs, I could get 10 - 11 per gallon. I just traded up to a 39.9' trailer 8+000 lbs, and got 7 to 9 per gallon. Now I just got a 250 ford with a turbodiesel. I got an average of 11.4 per gallon on a 5000 mile trip. I think you have to match up your rig with the correct combination of load and power.

We just got back from an Arizona Desert road trip and our average cost per day for 12 days was $107. We stayed at friends, KOA, and Arizona State Parks during our trip. We did cook in the FR3 a few times, but mostly ate out.
The average also included our fuel cost. We were so happy that gas prices were low. It was much better than getting a hotel room. The best part, our FR3 behave and performed throughout the trip. It really handle the back roads nicely.

That is about what I get without towing. I am in North Idaho and over 4th of July and Lookout passes to Missoula I will burn about 30 to 40 gallons.. Last summer went to St Louis and could go 400 miles and still be above a quarter tank. Averaged 6 to 8 depending on winds. I do drive about 70 on the interstates.

Yeah.... I can't drive 40 miles from Salem Oregon without hitting mountains... (not like Colorado mountains) but we live in a valley and from every direction are hills... that's what makes it nice out here I guess...
but towing my Jeep I'm getting about 6 1/2 mpg....
I've only had this thing since last June and we haven't really gone on long trips yet....
The gas out here is about $1.70 to $1.80 a gallon.... by summer it'll be close to $3.00....

I can fill up for 1.45 right now at a station less than a mile from my house. $3.00/gal in the summer? Yeesh. I should back up a holding tank and fill it up!
I have an f150 crew cab that used to cost $100.00 to fill up and now it's less than $40.00. I love it.
FYI. I just ordered a 5-star tuner for my FR3 and am interested in seeing what it does for my overall driving experience. I don't expect much in the way of mpg savings as I've had them on other ford trucks and it didn't do much in that regard BUT I am excited to see how it changes the shift points in the tranny. It's common knowledge on here how the screaming and shifting of the f53 tranny is a little cumbersome and concerning to some. I understand these chassis' were designed with the rev points higher but I'm still not sold that it's a good thing in the long run.
I'll report back after our trip in March.

My rig gets about 7 mpg towing or not. It will pass about everything but a gas station.
Good luck.

Yeah for sure I'd like to know about that 5-star tuner...
The only thing I've ever driven that revs out like my FR3 is a NASCAR car I drove once... and my Motocross bike.... nothing and I mean nothing I've ever driven on the road can rev like an FR3.... and mine will not go into 3rd or 4th gear unless I lift my foot.
I'm hoping gas prices stay down, but out here on the left coast, they always go up in the summer... some BS about summer blends and refinery shut-downs... they always hike it up in summer here.
I'm prepared for $3.00 fuel.

Big difference in truck towing a trailer and a class A gas motorhome towing a car. Comparing is not even apples and oranges.
