I'm not an expert in credit card security procedures, but I don't see how asking for your ZIP code before pumping fuel can be an effective security measure.
Think about it - if you go to any establishment and buy anything, you get a receipt that has, among other things, the ZIP code on it. You get a receipt whether you purchase anything with either a stolen credit card or cash.
So assuming you go to a Walmart, buy a loaf of bread and then go get fuel at the Murphy's. The ZIP code is on the receipt and there you go.
