Gas Credit Card Limits

Quick Check gas stations in New Jersey have a $75 limit for Visa, MasterCard, etc per stop. Is this common elsewhere in the US? With an 80 gallon tank and $3.50 gas, I would need to stop at multiple stations to fill up.

Same here in La. I just stay at the pump and restart it with another purchase.

Throughout our travels we have experienced limits, however, just get your receipt, then re insert credit card for additional filling...works every time.

Fast Trip here in Bakersfield, California has a $75 limit plus 35 cent transaction fee on my debit card. If its cheap enough I will go there otherwise I goto 24/7 travel center which has no limit and no transaction fee for using my debit card.

Wow- if you run down near empty and want to fill up you are talking some
SERIOUS money!!!
As others have said you can just re-start the pump.
Also if you know the station has a limit, I believe you can go inside and
get pre-approved at the counter and go out and pump as much as you need.

Then you have to go back inside to finish the transaction.
I sometimes send the DW inside with the plastic while I stand at the pump
and wait for the signal to begin the bleeding er I mean fueling!!

Varies by station in Iowa, but a number of them cut off at $75 . . . whether it's a traditional credit card, or debit. At most, the debit card continues past the $75 mark, and thankfully, many stations don't yet have a limit. Like others, I just start the pump again, and re-swipe the card.

Just some FYI while in New Jersey, one of the only states that YOU CAN NOT pump your own gas, so you either tip the attendant or pull out and go to the next pump, with a different attendant.

To be honest, I've never done either and just had the attendant restart the pump. Maybe I'm a bad person. :-)

Interestingly though- in NJ, you still pump your own fuel at truck stops at the truck pumps.

LOL, no usually they do just restart for you, I'm saying just in case maybe the attendant is having a bad day. I too have never had a problem while in NJ.

Thanks for the reminder to never fill up in New Jersey! I tip Waiters, shoeshine guys, and Bellhops... would never tip a gas station attendant.

It seems to change from station to station. Some places have no limits, a few have $50 debit card, $75 credit card, and instead of re-inserting the card I will just do a pay inside mode for the whole amount. Some credit cards are now asking for your zip code for security.

Oregon is another state that requires an attendent to pump gas. I dont tip them, thats their state law & their job - its not like they run into the store and buy me a soda and snack while I'm gassing up.

I recently had my debit card #'s skimmed & used out of state for a tune of several thousand dollars. Fraud dept called me to confirm charges - which werent mine. They said the crooks commonly collect the #'s at gas pumps. The bank suggested I stop paying at the pump & go inside to use my debit for gas. I had always thought I was careful in checking for tampered slides at the pumps, but still happened to me.

Gas stations and casinos trigger fraud alerts...Last year, DH traveled to AZ & used his debit twice at a station & triggered an alert. Fraud dept called the house & I had to have him call bank to confirm charges or they'd cancel his card.

So, even tho its a minor inconvenience, paying inside and having limits per transaction is less stress than cancelling cards and worrying about a bill I didnt create.

That's why I use a credit card rather than my debit card.
IF the number gets skimmed and bogus charges ring up-
IT'S THEIR MONEY that's stolen not MY money from my checking account!
Plus I get 1.5% cash back on everything.

Several times I had the pump stop at $75 on my credit card, then $35 on a debit card, so I had to use another debit card to finish the fill up.

At a Flying J in Nevada, there was a sign on the RV island pump that the VISA card limit was $495. Filling up some Diesel Class A's could hit that limit.

Two or three times now, I've had debit cards compromised. I've never lost a penny in any of them once the fraud departments got involved. In the first one, they racked up something like $3,000 in charges over various banks before the fraud systems shut them down.

Yeah, that's turning into a real problem for us Canadians who have postal codes instead of zip codes. I've had to leave some gas stations and travel to another one to use the credit card.

Multiple countries can also trigger it. Many, many years ago I had mine trip when I used it in 4 different countries in Europe on the same day.
