My personal preference is Castrol SAE 30. That is provided you only run generator in the warmer months with outside Temps 40 or warmer. If you plan to use generator also in colder weather use a 15w40.

We live in Illinois and exercise generator monthly in the winter. I use 15w40.

According to my manual 30 wt for warm weather use... I live in the Deep South so 30 wt it is. I used the stuff from WM. As long as it has the correct SAE spec on it, brand doesn't really matter.

Just regular motor oil? Or 4-stroke?

The generator I use is 4 stroke, oil goes in the sump. I use the WM brand Permatech, or whatever other brand that meets the ratings. I buy 2 quarts, takes 1.6 to fill mine up, the leftover is for topping up if and when necessary.

Onan 4000 air cooled genset comes with 15w-40 from
the factory. The manual reads that you can use SAE 30W. I tried
that but starting was sluggish when up North and nights get cool.
15w-40 is labled as a Diesel Oil however the specs meet the Onan requirements.
I change the oil every 100 hrs using a transfer pump from the 5 qt
jug the oil comes in. Wallymart is a good place to get the sauce.

Thank you. I saw that in the manual too. I will go 15w-40.
