You actually don't want to fill the water heater with pink stuff. That's what the knobs are for. You bypass the water heater and remove the anode for winter. You use the pipe in the compartment to suck up the pink stuff with the pump once you have bypassed the heater.

If the anode was out then it (the heater) was already drained. The photo attached shows normal summer use knob positions.
