Dinghy Towing Guide

I found the Motorhome.com website with 16 years of Dinghy (toad) research very helpful. I needed a small truck so went with a 2006 GMC Canyon 4wd crew cab. Have been very pleased with our selection.

We are looking at getting a new toad.. we know we don’t want a Jeep. Right now we tow a grand vatara four down. It looks like all the newer vehicles have to be dollied. We like the 2017 volkswagon golf... the gas mileage is amazing.. has anyone towed a low profile car like this? I’m wondering when the front is on the dolly ... is the back dragging on the ground. ... the golf weighs 4096 pounds

Funny, I just set up my '12 Ford Focus hatchback last month for a cross country trip. Too long of a trip for my '10 Ford Escape which is heavier and has transmission issues when towed too fast. My Focus is manual. So, on each trip, we get to decide which vehicle to bring.

I place my 2009 VW EOS on a tow dolly and have not had any problems. I even put my bike rack on the EOS and still plenty of clearance.

I have been researching the Fiat 500 for towing. Unfortunately, it is too dang small!
Also, the 4 door version is very hard to find, especially with a manual transmission.

You are the second person I have seen talking about the Mini.

Did you have to do anything "special" (base plate mods, additional wiring) to get it to work?

About how many miles?

Any strange servicing requirements?

Thanks!

Just bought a 2017 Focus, automatic and had Demco Base plate installed. At under 3,000 pounds most states don’t require a brake system and shouldn’t. Best part is one of the few automatic’s that is easily towable.

I tow a Kia Soul with a manual transmission. It is inexpensive to buy, has great cargo capacity and you don't even know it is there!

Traded the Jeep Liberty to save weight and better gas mileage on the new 2018 Hyundai Elantra sport.

Also saved about 1400 lbs of Toad weight as the Elantra is around 3k.

Six speed turbo so fun and 4 door so practical when friends haul the Harley’s and we take the car.

Blue Ox base plate, tow bar, demco stay and play braking system. Since the stay and play uses power brakes also installed a charging system through the connector.

5 minutes or less hookup and disconnect. Hardly know its back there but watch in the rear view camera.
