Towing a Jeep flat down ??

Just picked up a 2018 Jeep Cherokee and will be setting it up with Roadmaster tow bar and base plates. I have a question: Will the Jeep record all the miles its towed?

Short answer: NO.

We tow a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee four wheels down and no milage is added to the odometer when we tow.

Congratulations on the new Jeep!

Thanks 757Dave, was not sure if fuses needed to be pulled or anything done to make it not add all the towed miles. Will now look for a rock guard for the rear bumper to protect my lil baby.

You're Welcome

Just follow the directions in the owner's manual for towing the Cherokee and you will be fine.

We copied the pages on the copier and enlarged them and put them in the glove box so that we can refer to them each time we hook it up as a TOAD.

We also used Roadmaster base plate and the sterling tow bar. Been happy with our choice.

Happy travels...

757Dave is correct. If you have the Cherokee that’s rated for flat towing (some aren’t), the transaxle is placed in neutral and all wheels are free wheeling and the odometer doesn’t record the miles. Follow the owners manual for recreational towing. We’ve towed ours about 16k so far with no issues. Enjoy!

Check carefully with your Jeep dealer to see if the 2018 Cherokee needs a modification to activate the power steering while towing to prevent the "Death Wobble." Found this mentioned the the January issue of the Family Motor Coaching magazine. This seems to only involve vehicles with electric power steering. Was free for our 2016 Cherokee but others have reported being required to pay. A note with our modification also warned that the battery could be drained in as little as three hours so we also have 12VDC from the motor home to the Jeep battery while towing.

Orider,

AS long as your Cherokee has the Active Drive II transmission it can be towed four wheels down. No mileage will be added to the odometer. The steering issue was corrected in late 2015 with all Cherokee's with AD II trans modified at the factory. There should be a contact number in your manual that you can call to verify your vehicle has been modified. You'll need the VIN when you call.

I tow a 2016 Cherokee with no problems. Follow the instructions in the manual to put it in neutral (disengage the computer).
