I tow the Wrangler Unlimited with our DP now, but with our last RV we towed a Tacoma on a car hauler (much heavier than the flat towed Wrangler) with a Ford chassis and never had an issue. Even installed a ScanGage to monitor transmission temps - no issues at all through mountains.

Would love to take my JK unlimited, but don't think the 37" tires would last long. Anyone flat tow with oversized tires?

A mile of tire wear is the same, driven or towed.
Best thing, your jk will be up, and out of the spray of gravel from the tv.

We flat tow our 2013 Rubicon behind our coach every where we go. We do a few events with our Jeep Club not mention our trips to sunny Myrtle Beach. My Rubicon is lifted with 33's on it. Tracks perfect behind our coach.

Thank you to everyone that commented! Great information, I will get rid of some weight on my Jeep like the rear seat, jack, and possibly change the hardtop to soft, in hopes of making it a tad lighter. I'm also getting the Blue Ox brakes, RV hitch and hitch plate. I will get the RV wiring from JEEP! Again thanks for all the input, we are getting the FR3 by the end of April, so more questions maybe coming your way! Bless

I'm a little confused. The dry weight of a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is under 4400 lbs. Plenty of wiggle room.
I would think the FR3 has a 5000 lbs tow capacity. Unless you are going to exceed that (keep the fuel tank under half) you'll be fine. No need to loose the top or back seat. Set up your tow bar & braking system and enjoy the ride.
We are a jeep family. I've towed with my wife's Unlimited and pull my Rubicon behind our coach. Never an issue.
Good luck and enjoy!

I bought an Acme tow dolly to tow my daughter's civic (2700lbs) this summer, but may attempt a short trip with the Jeep to see how it does. At $400 a piece for tires, would hate to scrub them out.

you talked about lightening yourd jeep up---- I went from a fiat 500 (2700lbs on scales) to a 4200 jeep rubicon , and really, I cannot tell hardly any difference at all pulling it with my Fr3. I thought that It would make a big difference. I have not been on a long trip with it yet to check mileage, but do have a bully dog watch dog and mileage looks to be with in a tenth of a mpg. The Fr3 acceleration is no different than pulling the jeep or fiat 500. OH my fr3 is loaded close to max, wife likes to take EVERYTHING she can fit in it. So far my gas mileage (NO wind )averages 7.5. Before 7.6

So far (1300 miles) not towing i've gotten around 7.5-7.8 mpg (mountain/hill) in the GT. Buddy flat towed his Dodge Ram (5300lbs) from OH to TX and back with "exact" GT (bought same model, same trim, same time, same dealer/salesman, same great deal) and got 6.3, he doesn't baby it any either. He also said, he didn't feel much difference pulling it or not. The mountain driving this summer will tell the tale. With this thread, I'm becoming more inclined to take the Jeep this summer, especially with the stop in Moab.

We tow our 4,200# Jeep Rubicon behind our FR3 30DS. I'm always looking at the rear camera to verify it's still attached.
We found the "Ready Brake" system at the annual Quartzsite show and like it - seems to do the job: NSA RV Products - Ready Brake and Ready Brute Home A cable is attached to the Jeep's brake and connects to the Ready Brake with a detachable wire. There's an indicator light that is run up to the driver area that shows when the brake is activated. When you step on the RV brakes the force of you vehicle pushes towards the RV and then the Ready Brake pulls the wire to and applies the brake on the towed vehicle.
We started with a Roadmaster Falcon 2 tow bar, but converted over to a 10,000# BlueOx towbar found in a garage sale for just $25! I prefer the BlueOx for disconnecting as the Roadmaster Falcon 2 always seemed to bind.

We pull a 2010 jk 2door 2.5inch lift with 33 inch tires and pulled back seat out but replaced with cooler full of beer couple chairs and full of fuel scales 4200lbs. All together with mh the cw is 17,480lbs. We use the elite ready brute tow bar with surge brake ( love that thing ) and blue ox base plate. We are starting to average 10mpg, the v-10 with the 6 speed trans is really stating to work for us

Nice Rig.
We couldn't agree more. We tow my 2013 Rubicon with a 2.5" RC lift with 33's. Tracks so well behind the Coach.
We're heading to the OBX in September. Looking forward in running the beach with the wild horses

Towing a Jeep Wrangler Xlimited
Do you leave they ignition keys on "run"? I test towed my jeep last night and followed the owners manual but there was mention of the keys. I did leave the keys in the run position when I towed it. Thanks
