We have an FR3, but this is more general: pets

When you are moving, how do folks secure their dogs in the motorhome. I know some people let them sit on the dash, but that's not the safest option. We want to travel with them, and are anxious to see how others handle this when under way.

I have a 3 year old toy poodle. He lays under the driver's seat. Only comes out if my wife moves around. He had been doing this since he is a year old.

Our coonhound lays at my wife's feet on the passenger side. Doesn't move at all. We do keep her leash on the entire time. Our friends have smaller pooches and keep them kenneled under the dining table.

My two dachshunds ride in their bed between us. We make stops for stretching and water/bathroom breaks. Oh yeah the dogs do this too.

Safest method to be sure would be a kennel Secured to the table somehow. In a TV, kennel absolutely! (X LBS of Pet zinging around the cab would be a Very Bad Thing™

Realistically I don't know of any of our Class A friends who do this. A friend of ours who has a 45' Newmar said most accidents are sideswipes (Class A Wins) or cutoffs where he had to slam on the brakes - in that case asleep in the windshield was just about the safest place for their cats.

We have a Goldendoodle and he lays on his bed between the seats. Not sure if there is a complete "safe" way to travel with a pet.

They have safety pet seat belt harnesses that will keep your pet from moving in an accident.

Thank you all for your responses. I am closer to an idea. I like DavidMPDK's pics of the pooches. I'm thinking that if I could figure out a way to anchor travel leashes like we use in the car and allow them to lay on the doggy bed that would be the ticket!

mmmm...let's think about this idea. By "Leash" do you mean a length of cord/leather/whatever that attaches to a collar around your pet's neck?

If so, and it was anchored to say the table and you slammed on the brakes, you pet could well slide down the center and have their neck snapped

If you are going to do this, I suggest a body harness.

Take a Look here:

Yes, a dog should always be secured with a harness during travel.

Prevents them from becoming a missile during a wreck and hurting you, your passenger, or themselves.
Prevents them from getting loose during a wreck and running into traffic and getting ran over or lost.

Yes they should be harnessed. If you notice Dax & Kala have their harnesses on and will be connected to seat in travel. By having them there we can reach down and pet them every now and then just to let them know that "Yes every thing is about them" LOL. They sleep and never seem to want to move in travel. The bed has a rubber pad on the bottom so it never slides.

When I put Gunner's harness on it's like Christmas to him, he gets so excited. He knows we're going somewhere.

My small chocolate Lab has his spot snuggled in between the seats. My large Golden Retriever is jealous because he has to stay in the back on a furniture pad.

Our dogs are in the 40 to 50 lb range each. we put them in their harnesses and have a lead that attached to the seatbelts on the couch that runs on the driver's side. They are used to it now and sleep most of the time.

Pets

Obtain a well constructed, properly sized pet crate. Securely anchor the crate...where depends on the layout of your vehicle. Keep your pet in the crate while traveling. People who allow their pets to lie on the dash or under a seat or on the couch, etc. are sentencing their pets to death or severe injury in the event of a serious traffic accident.

Traveling with pets

I don't know if there is a correct way for all breeds. We have two Great Danes 140 lbs each. They think they are pocket dogs and want to sit in your lap. However we restrict them to the sofa, floor between the front seats. They are well behaved and travel well.

Airline-approved crates secured with bungee cords. Same as in the car. I wouldn't let a small child ride without a car seat, either. Too much can go wrong.

We have a pet bed between the seats of our Sunseeker 3010DS. Our Aussie spends most of her time there. She really is a great traveler and causes no issues whatsoever when on a road trip. Do whatever is best for your personal situation.
