Does anyone know what Octane Ford recommends?

Not enough information. Not all Ford products use the same octane fuel.

My motorhome has a ford chassis V10 motor they recommend 87 octane. My Chevy Volt requires Premium, go figure.

Here's an answer to a related question that no one asked.


As Batts-toy stated, the Ford V-10 is designed for 87 octane. If you buy gas at higher altitudes, such as in Colorado, you'll see the pumps are posted 85 or 86 octane for unleaded regular. That's still okay because at higher altitudes the air is thinner and un-turbocharged engines run with lower combustion pressures, so they don't need quite as high octane gasoline. Modern engines have knock sensors so if you should fill up with 85 octane and still have some in your tank when you reach a lower altitude (not likely at the rate mine uses gas), you would loose a slight amount of power but you won't hurt the engine.

Higher than required octane won't hurt anything, but it doesn't make any difference in mileage or power, either. Some brands claim they have more fuel system cleaner in their premium grades.

I assume you are talking trucks. I'm not aware of any Ford truck that requires more than 87 octane. On the Ecoboost, 91 is recommended but not required for towing. In normally aspirated Ford trucks, you would likely be wasting your money by using premium. They are designed for 87.

This is not to say that there isn't some small gain from premium in vehicles that detect spark knock and make timing adjustments on the fly. But the gains are small and generally cannot be felt in the seat of the pants. And again, not required that I am aware of.

Sure, I realize that. I generally run 87 in mine and dump whatever GTX260 is left after the race weekend in on top of it. It wont keep, so it might as well get used.

My response was, uh, more tongue in cheek.

Mine calls for 87 octane but I run the 89 since I mostly use it for towing. I know there is prob not much gain, if any, by doing so, but it is not my daily driver either so the price difference isn't going to be that much to pay.

My manual for the 2007 F-150 5.4 Triton says to use 87 octane no matter what.

So being an unimaginative sort, that's what I do.

The computer in new vehicles will adjust all of the engine parameters for best performance. No need to use higher obtain fuel.
