If you have a diesel engine, then I would say it is for engine block heater.

Maybe, just maybe, it's your water heater.

That's what I was thinking.

Nope - it's the block heater, definitely. The outlet there is for it. Only plug it in for temps from about lower 40's down.

If you keep it plugged in, it uses quite a bit of electricity. Unless it's needed, I would leave it unplugged. There's another post on here about someone who couldn't figure out why his power usage was spinning until he figured out it was the block heater cycling on and off.

No need to unplug the heater any longer

Well being in the HVAC business this is what I installed in the electrical area. Mounted on the wall beside the outlet and wire into it..it allows the outlet to get power once it drops below a specific setting. I have mine set at 40 deg and turns it off once the temp goes above 50...all of this less than $100....

Brass bulb is run into the engine area...once the engine starts the heat there turns it off..

Very clever, I like it. Hopefully I will never use it here in So. Cal., but sometimes on trips to AZ in the winter months we see a bit of cooler temps.
