I was considering Shell Rotella T 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil, I think you can get 5 Gal at Walmart for under $70.00. I'll go grab the book and see if there is a recommendation.

The book says use API Service 15W-40 with a CES20081 rating, or a API rating of CJ-4/SL.
"Use of "synthetic engine oils" (those made with API group 3 or group 4 base stocks) is permitted, subject to performance and viscosity limitations of petroleum (mineral) based engine oils. The same oil change intervals that are applied to petroleum (mineral) based engine oils must be applied to synthetic oils." (ref: Owners Manual ISB6.7 CM2350 B101)
There is more info based on weather conditions that you may need to consider.
FYI Our Legacy is a 2014

Anyone know the engine oil capacity? I can't find it in the book.
Thanks.

Three gallons (12 quarts). Rotella seems to be the recommended oil. They sell it at Walmart in one gallon containers, too.

Valvoline Royal Purple 15W-40 Oil is the recommend product for Cummins engines. The oil containers even have the Cummins logo on the front label. I can usually find this on sale between $10.60 TO $11.50 a gallon depending on which store has the oil on sale. It is also recommend that you change your oil filter at every oil change.
Please do not buy the cheap oil filters that the parts stores sell, buy the correct Fleetguard filters for your engine. Your engine will thank you in the long run. The Fleetguard filters are engineered for the Cummins engines. The filters provide the correct filter media, inlet/outlet hole pattern, Belleville spring washer and bypass to name a few items that will provide the proper oil filtration and circulation of the oil to your engine.

I used 4.5 gallons when changing the oil and filter. I have run the engine and checked and rechecked. Is this the same amount everyone else is requiring?

If the oil meets OEM specs... I would always pick the synthetic oil. Stay with reasonable intervals and enjoy a long and healthy engine life and improved economy. My only recommendation is to pick an oil and stay with it(others have different input).

I just pulled the oil quantity off of the Cummins engine specifications online. I do, however, see the confusion. I thought the 12 quarts sounded like less oil than I had been previously told and looking back it, I think it probably was. It seems that Cummins used different size oil pans on the same engine, depending on how much room the vehicle it's in has. The 12 quarts is apparently for the Dodge trucks it is used in and the RV version seems to be the 18 quarts you mentioned. I just get mine serviced at Freightliner, so I couldn't swear either way. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

No worries, I appreciate the input. I wanted to post what I actually used in hopes someone would be saved a trip. Lol. I am figuring out more of this big toy each day.
