Satellite dish
Any suggestions on a portable dish? Wondering if anyone has tried a non high definition one and how the picture is. The ones for the roof are very expensive. Thanks Scott

I just installed a Winegard crank up with elevation sensor ($250) with a D-12 SD DirecTV receiver. Personally the quality is fine and it is a fairly inexpensive add-on. I bring in a satellite in less than 1 minute.

Sure, you can find it here RV Satellite Dishes - Crank Up Model on Sale - PPL Motor Homes Shipping was only $9.99. Strangely PPL sells on Amazon but the same antenna was more if I bought it that way. Amazing that it can in about two days. I use it with DirecTV and with a D-12 receiver that I already had. You can still get the SD only receivers but DirecTV doesn't place them any more. One added advantage of the SD receivers is that they mate directly with your internal coax distribution network to all of your TVs.
Quality is excellent with SD. Elevation sensor is a must, that is what makes it so easy to setup.

Thanks. So where did you install it? Did you remove the HD antenna?

Nope, I left the existing antenna and installed it just behind my drop down bunk over the driver and passenger seat. Pretty much in the doorway.

Pathway X2 Portable Dish
After a good bit of research, with our priorities being portability, ease of setup, and HD picture quality, we settled on a Pathway X2 dish and Dish network's Wally receiver. We like Dish's Pay-As-You-Go service and that the Pathway X2 is completely automatic - plug it in to the receiver and it quickly finds the satellites. We purchased the package prior to our six week late summer trip and were pleased with its performance throughout the trip.

I know you inquired about "portable", but I installed the King Dome for use on SD Direct TV, rig is a little over a year old now and we love the Dome. Been in 20 states and quite a bit of Canada and seldom ever even have trees in the way. Very pleased with it and it was easy to install.

Good to hear. I was only looking into portable because of cost. Got a quote of 2500 to install a dome one. I'll look into it. Thanks!

Holy cow, that is outrageous. I waited for a sale at Camping World, ordered on-line, took me about an 1 1/2 hours to install myself, total cost was $875. Had to drill into the roof to find the coax connections, got the dimensions on where to drill from the guys at the FR factory which turned out to be spot on.

That's great. I will definitely look into that. Thanks! So the rig already has all the cables installed? Where did you put your receiver. Was it a High definition dish? Hope I'm not asking to many questions. I do really appreciate any advice.

Our dome is not High Def. I did not get that since the rig was not wired with HDMI cables for some strange reason and I did not want to go to that much trouble. The coax is installed to the roof in all rigs, I assume yours is in the same location as ours, but I would ask the FR diesel guys to confirm the measurements before drilling. Our receiver is just in the stack of electronics in the right upper cabinet. To clean them up I made a little wooden rack, before and after pic below. Picture of our rig with the dome on top as well. Black would have looked better, but I bought white since we live in the desert, anything to absorb a little less heat.
