Creative way to mount spare tire on Airflyte

Has anyone come up with a creative solution to safely mount the spare tire?

I was thinking of having the back frame reinforced to support a mount, but worried how that might affect the balance of the camper towing.

Found a colored matched hardcover just need to figure where to mount if possible.

On my last few rigs I've always opted to mount them underneath the front underside just forward of the leading axle, but as far back as possible. I generally raid a local junk yard and rob one of the crank winches from a Ford and have it mounted between the frame supports.

Drop the cable into the wheel-well and crank it right on up.

On this rig I picked one up for $35 and it cost me $45 for labor from a local welder.

They work fantastically, but a major draw back is a lot of these newer model winches require a propriety "key" to connect to the winch. Requiring you to carry a winch bar that will marry to the key. I'm not sure what other makers have in that regard, but certainly worth giving your local junk yard a call.

All told it's still a bit less expensive than some other storage solutions, but it DOES work like a charm. Tight up out of the way, but ready to go with a few cranks.

THX for the info. I have an appointment with a guy that specializing in trailer setups. We plan to re-enforce the frame and mount the tire on rear just below the window and reposition the license plate. Will post pictures if successful. Estimated cost is around $300.

What are you mounting the spare tire to? TT, pop-up...?

Shasta 1961 reissue. Very little groung clearence to put underneath

I'm guessing a 14 inch wheel for this beauty so the bumper looks to be sturdy enough to handle that. Trick would be to have the spare mount angled back to clear that slope on the back of the trailer.

The original Airflyte apparently did not come with a spare. The reissue version has retained that tradition.

It appears that attaching anything to the frame (like a spare tire) will void the warranty for the frame.

The plan is to have the work done 5/29. Will post pictures. Not to worried about voiding the frame warranty.

We are livin dangerously with out a spair for now:/ wich is super risky with the still low clearance after the shakle once we get one it will go I back of truck since the inside seem so delicate and the floor is a bugger to clean

OK. Here it is. Please note that this is not mounted to the bumper but the bumper rail. Road tested- no issues. Had it professional installed and required some modification and re-enforement. The U bolts are for show only to fill open holes. This is also a 19ft model.

Did the installer fabricate the spare tire holder? Or did he start with a pre-manufactored part and modify it? If the latter please provide part number and source. By the way it looks really nice. My wife isn't thrilled I'm going to put a spare tire under the dinette as a footrest.

I know he (JD Trailer and Hitch) started with a prefabricated part but I do not know which one. Sorry I don't have the part number. The total project was $300 including parts. He may can create a kit for you if you want to give him a call.

The way he set it up I would not have been able to do it myself. You really have to make sure there is zero movement in the mount so it does not bounce against the trailer.

My husband did the Ford spare tire thing...looks factory and frees up a lot of space ;-)

We used a Ford f-150 spare tire hanger and mounted to A frame...works very well and frees up a bunch of room in the forward cubby...

Can anyone please post pictures of their spare tire set up? I'm am getting $600 and higher quotes from rv repair shops in my local area.
