Changed out the CH751 Keys

I actually did this the other day, just have been too busy with work, Happy New Year!

Santa brought me some new replacement cam locks so now I do not need to worry about the crappy old CH751 keys. I was not really too concerned about security per se, but they put the cheapest and junkiest of all locks on there trailer. I was not ever really happy with how they worked and seemed to get jammed up. Now I do not need to worry about it.

Locks were ordered from CH751.com. They are a bit pricey maybe but I think they offered a good product. I guess this season will be the test of how they hold up but I already like how well they operate to lock and unlock. They seem of good quality and the lock mechanism is very tight (in a good way).

Install took about 15 minutes for the first one. Then 5 for the rest. I took more time to figure out how to put them in place to make sure they opened the correct way.

Trailer is winterized and stowed at the house for the winter so I will see how they work out for the 2016 season.

I was thinking of doing this in the middle of the door and just have corner ones regular latch. Never liked that one lock was on just one side of door. Of course that would mean cutting into door.

I am sure it can be done. The thing to keep in mind is the holes are not round holes. It is round but the sides are squared off so the lock can not be spun around in the hole.

Barrel Keys

Just wait until you find out they are the same key number that camping world carries. I did and had to change again.

I forget where I got mine but I found a site I could order new locks to match the key to my door. Now I only need 1 key for everything.

Great idea. Just remember it still only takes a flat blade screwdriver to open the cargo doors.

Yes, the door are the weak point. I did it not so much for security but also for just a better lock.

Found that using a Forester bit works really good for boring a 'controlled' hole in these RV's.........And a file works good also...

I do not have a picture of the lock out of the door but I do not think that would work. Needs to be squared off inside the circle if that makes any sense. Kind of like this: (_) It is not actually a FULL circle. A dremel and a file might be the way.

Good looking lock. I replaced all the locks on mine from rvlocksandmore.com great people to deal with. Even fix my mistake at no charge.

In most cases the door cost a lot more than every thing behind it TI took the locks off my unit and replaced them with thum locks don't always be looking for key

Although my water ski hanging in the storage compartment costs way more than the door (Ha!) ... I agree. The locks are more to keep honest people honest than to deter theft. Like said, a screw driver or carpenters prybar ... 10 seconds and you're in and rummaging around.

How'd you do that - replace cam locks with slam latches?

Bought 3 metal slam latches off 'net', cut hole bigger, installed. Slam latches are made for thicker doors, so you need to measure door and latch thickness and make a shim plate for inside door. Also added gas shocks, 2 per door.

Thanks Bob - looks good. What's that sticking out under the slam latch between the door and the frame?

slam latches have a striker plate, similar to the doors in a home
