Filling fresh water tank

Im a newbie. Bought a 2018 Grey Wolf 23dbh. Took out for the first time last weekend and filled with water and i assumed it was full because of water coming back out of fill hole and when i set up camp i checked gauge inside and it said i was only a 1/3 full. From what we used for water over the weekend im assuming the gauge was correct. before i take back for service im just wondering if anyone else has run into this issue. I appreciate any feedback. Did you fill it up before you hit the road? If so, the water might have siphoned out while you were driving.

no i did not. I filled up at the campground

My 2018 29TE would start back flowing out the fill and only say it had a 1/3, I looked at fill line and they had it ran up and over some other water lines and other things, I re routed it and can fill until it comes out the overflow on the tank

If you try to fill it too fast, it will come back out the fill. I have a 23MK and have to fill it slow until it comes out the overflow/vent under the camper. It takes a while.

Guages are notoriously inaccurate, but tanks can get an air lock and blow back long before they fill. I had a pinched vent line causing the blow back. Is the bottom of your trailer enclosed or open? If open you may be able to see the water level. You may also see the vent line at the top of the tank and verify it is not pinched.

Your FW tank has an overflow/vent hose. Be sure it is not kinked. On most, it is a hose hanging down next to the tank with no valve on it. Might have a critter in it.

You could always put a counter on your hose to know for sure how many gallons you’re putting in.

My Rockwood Mini TT will start to spit out the vent line when it is about half full. If I slow the flow for a minute or two then things go back to normal. I suspect it is water left in the vent line from the previous filling that is being pushed out by the force of new water entering the tank. When the vent line has burped then it is being a vent again.

Be careful not to jam a high flow hose down the filler opening. It is possible to create a tight enough connection from the hose fitting and the fill tube to exert a lot of pressure on a full tank and blow the tank up.

There are two lines hanging down. One is the drain for FW tank and the other one I'm assuming could possibly be the overflow/vent but it has some kind of caulk in it.

i do believe it is just caulk or the same kind of sealant they used to seal underneath the trailer

That is the overflow hose. That's how you know it i is full. Clean it out. See above: Critters. Mud dobbers.

Ran into the same problem a couple weeks ago. Turned out to be mud daubers in the tank vent. Here's how I fixed the problem.

Even with a clean vent you can still back up if you try to fill too fast. Someone said, and it is true that the tank needs to burp. What I did when we had a gravity fill is I used a inline filter to filter the cg water but it also slowed the flow enough to let the air escape as the water went in. It increases the fill time but when it starts to come out the fill port, you know it is full.

I had the same problem when I first filled mine. You can buy or I made a filler hose that goes down the filler tube using a garden hose shut off valve and a piece of tubing that fits in the filler tube. I also used a 5 gallon bucket to see how low it took to fill and then used the same setting on the hose to see how long it took to fill the tank half way and full. I have a 70 gallon tank and at half pressure it takes about 15 minutes to fill.
