Lippert Tailgate/ Cargo System

Our Cherokee 284BH came with the lippert tailgate/ cargo system. We are finally able to take a week long trip to the beach and we want to take our bikes. Just looking for ideas of how to secure the bikes. And if anybody here has a similar cargo system, what they use it for? The pic is a generic trailer with the cargo system.

Some have added bolt on bike tire carriers to the base and secured the bikes this way and used the upright post to keep them from falling over. I would most likely do this also, but would probably engineer my own upright.

I added swagman fork mounts. Just bolted them on. Work great!

I just set ours up there, and use Gear Ties to fasten the wheels to the platform and the bikes to the upright post. But since your Cherokee is a TT, wouldn't your bikes ride just as well in the truck bed?

Our Cherokee came with the cargo rack and the spare tire mounted to it. The first time I used it for the bikes, the spare tire scraped the ground every time we went through a driveway. It is basically just extra weight for us unless we can find a way to mount the spare underneath the trailer.

I have a 2017 Ram 3500HD Mega Cab with the 6'4" bed. I could get the bike rails for the truck. That is definitely an option. Thanks

The spare tire fits nicely inside the storage compartment under the bunks. That's where I keep mine so it doesn't drag when the rack is down.

I also place my spare in the rear storage area. Use two fork mounts to hold bikes. Front bike wheels into rear storage. I cut up some tire side wall pieces to put under the rack when it is down to take up some of the play in the rack. Also placed some washers on the bolts where it pivots to get rid of the side play. I also run two ratcheting tie downs from the outside of the rack to the rear frame loops the drag on the ground that keep the back of the trailer from dragging. Between the layers of tire sidewall, washers on the bolts, and the ratcheting tie downs I can see through my observation camera that my bikes don't bounce around as much as they did at first. I also use a regular tie down to hold the rear of each bike down. Every bit of play you can get rid of helps your bikes from bouncing around. It has worked well for the last 20 months for us.

It’s a quick release for the front tire. Takes seconds. Many bikes already have them. Or a wrench takes no time at all. Also people are less likely to steal a bike missing a wheel.
