2016 Dynamax DX3 - Cracked fuel line on #1 Injector
Hey all... Just left Cotopaxi, Co in our 2016 Dynamax Dx3 headed to the Dynamax Rally in Tennessee. Outside of Dalhart, Tx Hwy 87, 100 mile north of Amarillo started smelling strong diesel odor in the coach. Pulled off the road, opened the hood and found fuel spraying out of the #1 injector located at the very front of the engine.
Called a truck shop in Dalhart and talked to a knowledgeable mechanic. Described the issue to him, he indicated that with 29k miles on' the coach it was highly unlikely that the line connection to the injector was loose, more likely the flange was cracked on the line supplying fuel to the #1 injector. He said this was actually a really common problem with this particular freightliner/cummins combination. Caused by vibration.
Had to send the wife in our Jeep toad to Amarillo 100 miles away to Freightliner to pick up the #1 injector line. Spent a wonderful night in north texas with a smelly cow pasture and highway on one side and very active railroad tracks hauling miles of coal cars on the other. The mechanic came out this morning and replaced the fuel line in 15 minutes. Had to go back to his shop once we got going to have the engine compartment steam clean from the diesel fuel that sprayed all over the place.
With some research, I actually found a Cummins recall C1701 on this very issue which calls for the replacement of injector #1 and #6 fuel lines with rubber isolator brackets. Visually very easy to spot this issue on your engine. Just look at the supply line for injector #1 which is at the very front of the engine. There will be no bracket whatsoever on this supply line. Have attach a picture of the new line to injector #1 which includes the rubber isolation bracket.
Looking forward to meeting everyone at the rally next week.
