2018 Ram 5500 AppleCarplay

FYI, it looks like the harness/module that ships loose with the Ram 5500 (plugs in under the seat to get Aux and a couple more USB's) will work with Android Auto, but not Apple CarPlay. We have complained about this for a while.

They finally sent some engineers with, I guess, a newer module that does in fact work. FCA will work on a service campaign to correct those in the field that want the Apple side of things.

PLEASE don't bombard your Ram dealer with calls on this as it is BRAND new info, just learned. They will confirm that they work when replaced and then get details on the roll out (ETA March) and I will post the details as soon as I get them. I am going to see one so I can tell the difference.

Your case is different. I think for your purpose, the Android one works fine. I am working on a part number, but I also told my Ram rep I was missing one and what did I need to get a replacement. So I am working both sides.

I just went out on the line and grabbed a current one. I think it is actually two parts. The harness and the module itself.

White and black tag is the what was on the harness.
Blue is on the module.

Then I took a picture of the front.

The new module, I have not seen. But at least we have part numbers from the old one.

Does the harness and panel need to be changed or just the module?

Just an. Up date:
The cable that attaches the media hub (PN, 68322813-AC)
Is: wiring hub USB (PN, 68256846-AA)

The cable part number 3653140 doesn’t show up on the parts list for a 5500 cab .
Also , the cable looks like all that it is just a mico USB cable ( with a male on one end and a female on the other) that has be installed into a automotive socket/plug

If you look at the media hub you will see another socket next the the socket for the usb cable, I would love to find out what that is for!

I found out that the hub and cable is needed to update the ac system and radio. My temp control was not indicating changes, was working only at max.

The NEW module that is needed looks the same, other than INSTEAD of USB on the right port, you get the data cable signal that looks like the one on the left. The new module is available today for ordering, however, if you want the cost covered, then you'll need to wait until they do a TSB.

The theory is that when we delete the center console, they are shipping loose the harness and the module. BUT, they are shipping the one that comes with the smaller radio and not the larger uConnect that we use. That large one is the one with CarPlay.

So once they get the service campaign written they will provide the other module at no charge. Android Auto will work on the one in the picture...just not Apple CarPlay.

When will you start receiving 2019 Dodge chassis? Will the Apple CarPlay be standard in 2019 without needing to order the parts for the mod?

We are thinking about ordering a 30FW for delivery Spring 2020 and wondered when the newer chassis would be online?

We won't start getting 2019 chassis until May. Which means they won't start hitting the field until August of 2019. We "hope" they will have the proper module in there, but we have no control over that. It was supposed to be standard in the 2018 chassis...

I called my local RAM Commercial Truck dealer who had 17 of the 2018 5500 chassis for sale. I asked him if he would service the RV. After some hesitation he said that they would but they were not really equipped for RV’s. I don’t understand that when they sell 5500 chassis that you know truck bodies/vans are then mounted. They are a very large Dodge dealer with like 800 RAM trucks in stock. Trucks are a big deal in Texas.....

Is it the module that adds carplay to the unit or is it in the head unit? Can the head unit be software upgraded?

I believe it is the combination of both. It has to have the right software and then the proper data cable.

So it is my understanding you can't add it.

Maybe your RAM dealer can add it?
