Alcoa Rims

Well this may seem like a stupid question, but I am allowed to ask at least one stupid question per day.

On our Freightliner M2's, does anyone know if the Alcoa rims that come on them are coated or not? The wheels feel like they are clear coated, but I cannot tell.

As you guys know, you can only use certain cleaners/polishers on coated wheels.

I have some nasty water spots that are not cleaning off and I want to buff them out, but I dont want to hurt the clear coat if they are coated.

Alcoa didnt seem to know, I wasted about 3 hours on the phone trying to find out.

Some are, some are not. I used to work at truck stop garage. You could tell when you did tire changes. Easy way to tell is get some Semi Chrome or Mothers alum polish and if they are clear coated your rag will not turn black.

looking at that brochure, mine does not have the dura bright sticker, so I am guessing that means that are uncoated.

Mine are not coated. I do use mothers to polish them up. Sometimes during my travels I run across guys doing it in the parking lot of truck stops $ 10.00 a wheel. I jump on that.

Myself, I don't like coated wheels because at some point, from a stone chip, moisture will get under the clear coat and cause the aluminum to white rust...and it starts looking worse and worse.

My rims were clear coated and I used Zinzer stripper and a pressure washer to strip and then polished them.

Never use clamp on wheel weights either, Just adhesive ones. The clamp on weights will compromise the coating and the wheels will oxidize around the weight.

Years ago I had a Corvette with Fikse racing wheels. Center part of the wheel was clear coated and outside was polished aluminum. Fikse recommended using Simple Green cut in half. Spray on when wheels are cold. Wash rest of car and wheels last.
Worked Great. Still use it on all my vehicles. Hope this helps.

Our M2 Alcoa wheels have a part number stamped. Then the Alcoa web site has info on the wheels and cleaning recommendations.
