Better screws less torque please

Got up on the roof today for a wash and inspection before heading out for a month. I ended up spending more time up there than I wanted[emoji26]

Noticed sizeable gap on rear cap where it ties into the roof. Further inspection revealed broken screws (12) to be exact. So had to re-drill in between holes add better screws clean the old caulk off and prep for re-caulk. Oh well... part of ownership I guess. I'm sure the installers will be made aware of this AGAIN...

Better to find it now and fix than to find major damage later. Good catch!!

The proper screw seems to be a constant battle.

Is it the screws or the person doing the screwing? What kind of guns are being used in the factories? Do they have clutches? Evidently not or the screwers do not know how to use them, then it's all on the end user......the screwee LOL.

On every new rig I spend at least a day with a cordless going over every screw I can find, and a good 30% or better are over torqued and stripped. If not stripped they're jammed in at some goofy angle. That also includes the lugs on neutral / ground bars and AC breakers in converters which is a nice touch. It screams of not giving a crap.

We have a saying in construction.......slow down and go fast.

I had almost the same thing, but mine was the front cap.
The screws "broke out" to the side, front cap was pulling away.
They were barley holding. Relocated them and put them in "the right way"!
Also used more screws and longer screws and better caulking job!

Send a message via MSN to Tiggerdad
If it were my rig I would also lay a bead of Dicor or other good polyurethane sealant on top of those screws and where the metal strip contact the roof. If that channel gets water in it it will seep under those screws.

Hey. I bet good stainless steel screws would cost a dollar more.

Hard to believe that there is anything solid enough in there to break a screw off, no matter how low in quality they are. Learn something everyday.

Sorry Tom but a stainless would break easier , they are a lower tensile strength grade than regular steel screws.

Back in March I repaired this... it seems to have been the source of my totally damaged rear bath floor. Question.. Brian Clemons, is butyl tape applied under this strip before screws? There didn't seem to be any. I used longer screws and resealed. A little to late apparently damage had been done. Thanks for the response. I hope the roof is not damaged as well. One other question, the floor is damaged all the way to the driver and passenger wall, has this compromised the integrity of the side walls.. thx

For those following... the piece you see is just covering drain pan for the night. Should have new floor in tomorrow... hopefully.. thankfully, the wood is solid on the other side of that transition. Moisture meter shows good... happy bout that..
