Here's what I did to fix without replacing the door seal.
1. Pulled the seal(s) partially away to get at the rusted metal grip tabs of the seal.
2. Removed what was left of the rusted metal grip tabs with a screwdriver blade up to where the metal was still unrusted.
3. Sand papered the compartment door edges and cleaned.
4. Applied "Ospho" a rust inhibitor to the cleaned and prepped metal edges.
5. Applied thick bead of 3M weather-strip sealant (black) to the length of the seal where the metal grip tabs had rusted away.
6. Reattached the seals to the compartment edges.
The repair took about 45 minutes to complete.
