Dynamax DX3, Force HD Brakes
Hi, I'm a prospective buyer of a Dynamax DX3 or Force HD. I am impressed with the power, drivability and floor plans of the coach.
While inspecting the coach I noticed that the Freightliner M2 chassis used on the DX3 And Force HD have drum brakes on all 4 wheels. Is there an option for disc brakes ?

Not at this time. 95% of the big truck market still runs tried and true drums. I don't see us ordering them with disks unless there is a huge shift that way. When stopping distance requirements were shortened, there was a thought disks would become more popular. Instead, drums just got improvements and disks continue to be rare

I can't imagine the sheer size of the rotors to stop a rig of that size.
Drums work.

M2 also has a dual stage engine break. Uses them all in conjunction.

Ford's F 53 Chassis used in most all large gas class A's use Disc brakes.

Limited use 33k GVWR versus truck chassis 54k GVWR commercial applications.

On "the web I noted 33,000#- thought you were discussing truck front end truck RV's?
My Georgetown had discs at all four. Better braking than accelerating.

The disc brakes on the F53 are only a quarter inch larger diameter than the rotors on an f350.
Same two piston caliber.
Hydraulic.
I would rather the air actuated drums of the M2 chassis.

Air actuated drums vs hydraulic caliper two piston disc I think we should both move on to electro induction brakes and we can both not about anymore worry about wear and tear

Sorry that should be GCWR not GVWR. Most large truck front RV's are based off of commercial chassis. The Freightliner M2 offers disk now but they haven't really taken off. Smaller GCWR RV chassis are a different animal. Class A's are also typically hydraulic disk brakes whereas the M2 chassis are air brakes.

It's also about safety. Hydraulic leak means reduced breaking. Air brakes are the opposite.

It's interesting. The jayco Seneca, advertises disc brakes on their m2 chassis.

I believe they moved to all air brakes for 2016.

Well, not necessarily their 2016, but their 2016 chassis. Minor difference, but they could have 2016's on a 2015 chassis.

My experience with air brakes have been excellent. Provided the air system is maintained properly, air dryer, tanks checked and drained as needed to remove water. The stopping power is phenomenal. When used with the two stage engine brake the DX3 supplied... well it dont get any better than that.
Now what I've heard about disc brakes on heavy chassis. When I was having transmission service done on my bus back a few years ago, the shop had a 40' class A with brakes and rotors destroyed. At the time it appeared that the brake service area "pads" and rotors weren't enough to stop this 40' monster. The mechanic says they run across these all the time. Frankly, he was surprised they even put that system on such a heavy coach.
Unless they have made drastic changes in the system similar to Newell Coach, I believe the flimsy systems being installed out there wont be as reliable. They have their place, but maybe not in the big chassis market... but again, maybe big changes have been made that I'm not aware of? For me, I'll keep my air drum brakes..
I do know for a fact that Newell Coach uses disc brakes with ABS but unless builders are going to use these massive systems, the rest wont work.. some engineers get it !
