Isata 5 Gen oil change

I just did my 50 hour oil change on the generator. If you want to make this a simple task stop by harbor freight and pick this little gem up. Makes refilling the oil a breeze. Also cross for the oil filter I used a K&N HP-1010Click image for larger version

Was hoping you made a YouTube video [emoji16]. Maybe you can fly up to GSO, change mine and I’ll video it for the rest.

Isata 5 Gen oil change

Super easy. Crawl underneath. Drain plug on the bottom clearly marked( 3/8”socket). Open the gold colored door( squeeze the two black handles and it swings open) to reveal the oil filter. Use the pump to add 3 quarts of 15w40 of Shell Rotella. Remember you will need to open the drivers side slide to access the fill panel. Just remove the four screws.Click image for larger version

Funny, I just did the oil and filter change in our Isata 5 Generator over the weekend too.

I did not, however, use the transfer pump for the refill. I used a transmission funnel with a short-ish section of 3/4" hose jammed onto the end of it. Worked like a charm. 3/4" is a PERFECT fit for the fill hole on the genset, so it didn't slip out, leak or drip. I put in the required amount of oil and let the funnel/hose sit and fully drain for 10-15 minutes while I did some other stuff. Came back, yanked it out and all was good. No mess.

stored the section of hose in a gallon sized zip lock and will be traveling with it "just in case".

....oh wait, I'm an idiot and just noticed that you are in a DS! We have a DB floor plan and have a little access door in the side of the coach that leads to the generator. So, for us, there is NO WAY that you are going to get a funnel into the fill tube, the funnel with the hose I mentioned made filling easy.

Now that I see what you are up against on the DS, I understand the need for the transfer pump.

You will need a filter wrench.

Agreed with SSeaner, I don’t think you’ll be able to get it unscrewed by hand. You’ll want a strap-wrench or whatever your favorite oil filter wrench may be. You should install the new filter by hand, but getting the old one out would take some serious grip strength and twisting force…..at the same time.

FYI: I bought genuine Onan oil filters and they were noticeably bigger than what I pulled out of the generator. After a moment of panic and some google-ing, it appear that Onan has superseded the oil filter to the bigger one I was shipped. It threaded in fine and fit in the opening just fine.

For reference, here’s a picture of where the filter is in the generator (picture stolen from the web BTW). Just posting it to give you an idea of the semi-confined space and how challenging it might be to get your hand(s) in there to unscrew it.
