SPEED +RPM's

I'm new to the diesel world. I noticed that the RPM's seem to run considerably higher than a gas engine. Such as: 65 mph = about 2300 RPMs, is this right or am I missing the OD gear. This is cruising flat land.

My Titan XD runs 1750 rpm at 65 mph with no trailer, 2000 rpm with 8200lb trailer

Your not referring to the Cummins 8.9L because I'm looking approximately around 1750-1800rpm at 65mph.

I have the same model and that’s about what I run at 65 mph. I didn’t think it was that high. Engine doesn’t seem to be working hard at all.

yep that sounds about right. I had a Sprinter based RV(Winnebago View) and it seemed to like 68 mph as its cruising speed. The tach read 2400 at 68 . Something about that rpm made the rig feel smoother. I would normally get 15 mpg at that speed and the milage would drop if I traveled faster or slower ( unless I dropped down to 55 mph then the milage would go up considerably ).

Wow 15 mpg at 68mph! Pulling the Jeep I get about 14 mpg at 58 mph... when I went to 65+ not towing we only got 12mpg...

The V-6 diesels have less low end torque than the straight 6 ISL's, so they live in a slightly higher RPM power band.

I averaged 15.5 mpg on a 1,000 mil trip to Big Bend in West Texas. We pulled a Honda CR-V and had some hills, but not really mountains. Without the toad I get closer to 17 mpg. We drove 65 mph on the 80 mph limit. Our overall average for the whole trip with stops for fuel and dog breaks was 58 mph.

I'm jealous! If it was a gas engine I could blame it on the crapy California fuel...
