Transmission Service

Has anyone with an older DX3 had transmission service yet? Mines a 2015 with about 40k miles on it. The selector shows, good health, oil level good, no codes, oil life 90%... I'm assuming these units have synthetic trans fluid but not sure?

Thanks
Slim

I just had mine done. Came out to $650. The intervals about when to do it are all over the board but I've been trying to go by the middle one (short haul I think it is) and that one calls for it at 30k. There's also a note in there about changing the filter at 5k which I didnt do either so I figure better safe than sorry in this case. 30k is an interval I use on my automobiles anyways. I was more like 36k when I finally did it though.

That said when going into the dealership they had it listed at 300,000 lol so who knows

Oil analysis is probably the only way to get a real answer. Other than that is a risk tolerance question I think. Cheap(ish) insurance I figure.

I was unsure of that myself also. Not sure how you'd tell? I guess chances are good since it came from Allison. I can tell you freightliner just put Mobil 1 in (I say just like that's a bad thing). If there's one thing I've learned I think these dealerships are even less intimate with Allison than they are with the inner details of Cummins if that makes any sense.

In our fleet trucks with this transmission we went with an oil sampling program and changed the filter at 15K intervals. Your Frightliner dealer or NAPA store can set you up for the oil sampling.

I guess my rig has synthetic..really didn't pay attention to this tag till just now. I'll plan on doing it myself in the next week. I've went by the readings on the push button control panel. Click image for larger version

Well that's nice. Can't say I've ever seen a tag like that. Can't say I've looked either...

With transsyd (tes295) you can probably follow the general service schedule. That would be 48 months or 150k miles. That's what I followed in my old coach and an Allison approved shop I go to also said about the change interval.

You can use any tes295 compliant trans oil.

I'm right on 48 months since new. So it looks like I'll be right on schedule. [emoji106]

I recommend Transynd. If you do a search for it you will find an active member on one of the duramax forums who actually came up with the formulation for Transynd. The benefits of Transynd in an allison transmission are substantial. If I can get the google thingy to obey my commands...lol...I will post a link.

here it is https://www.duramaxforum.com/forum/t...-transynd.html

This is what I ordered because synthetic is already in the transmission from the Allison factory. Good article you posted.. thanks Click image for larger version
