What Tail Light System for Isata 3 Toad

I have a 2004 Jeep TJ I'm setting up to tow behind my Isata 3. I have the tow bar and brake system for it, but still need to come up with a light setup for the tail lights. What works best for you?

I installed the Blue Ox independent light bulb kit in my Honda CR-V because I didn’t want to mess with diodes and tapping into my Honda light wiring. Real simple install, just drilled a 1” hole in the light housings and installed the bulb holders. Ran the wire underneath to the front plug.

You might want to read the thread about issues with the Isata 3 tail light controller where some people have had issues with losing tail lights with a Toad.

I just drove 2,500 mile with my setup and had no issues.

The guy I bought the braking system from had that setup on his Honda toad. I really like that idea, but I'm not sure the Jeep has enough room inside the tail light housing for another bulb. Do you have two bulbs lighting up on each side when the brakes are applied? The stock Hondas and the added Blue Ox ones?

Actually three bulbs on each side, a tail light, brake/turn signal and then the bulb I added which has two elements for tail, turn and brake, all in one bulb. The housings are quite large and easily accommodate the extra bulb.

You can also consider the magnetic add on lights which are also independent from factory wiring. They come on both wired and wireless types.

I built a light bar that goes onto toad receiver and ran a wire to front with connectors on both ends. Just like a trailer connects.

I used Hopkins toad wiring on my 12 Liberty. Where the Jeep wiring harness plugs into the light, the Hopkins harness plugs in between the two. Very easy to install. I got mine from RV Upgrades. It costs less than the others too.

Some tap into the stock lights right below the drivers door. Using 4 wire trailer plugs, you can have one set to connect the existing wires, and one for a new connection for towing (which go out the bumper to the MH).

Personally, I use wireless magnetic, as the stockers in our jeep also trigger when the ready brake system engages. The magnetic also work for when we dolly our other vehicle instead of bringing the jeep, and can be used on the back of a hitch rack (on MH, or either towed vehicle).

Hi, check the Roadmaster web site! They have wiring kits for many toad vehicles. I got mine from them for a Lincoln MKX and had it installed. Works great.

I got the cool-tech JL lighting kit. I believe theirs on for JK too. No need to run wires to the back. All done by passenger seat with a switch. Relatively easy to fit

Thanks for all the replies everybody. I've ordered some parts to try and see if I can get an independent bulb setup inside the Jeep tail light housing. Sort of like Milkmans #2 post above.

2X on the Roadmaster light kit. We swapped over our towed brake and light system from a Jeep Unlimited to a Fiat. We had to get a new light kit for the Fiat. It has worked flawlessly. Also, you might consider the battery charger kit for your TJ.

Wranglers are a great toweds.

Here is what I used in my 2012 and my 2015 Wrangler's. It's plug and play, no bulbs to mess with and comes with the pigtail. Works great too. You can install it your self, there are some Youtube videos out that will help you, one of the plugs is hard to reach, took me 3 - 4 tries to get it to connect. My guess is that MOPAR has one for an '04 also. Good luck.

We tow a CRV and find the magnetic stick on lights to be fine.

The Brake Buddy has its own line from the coach socket so no battery problems.

This setup allows towing trailers as needed.

Here's what I ended up using. It was cheap and fairly simple. The top bulb is the existing backup light. The bottom bulb is the existing tail/brake/signal light

I also am adding some small lights to the front side markers.
