2017 F250 Diesel

Hello all, is there someone out there towing a 2012 Sabre Fifth wheel around 31' in length with a 2017 Ford F250 Diesel, question is did you have to make changes to the truck or trailer so the bed clearance was acceptable.

Thank You.

I don't have a Sabre, but I have a similar 5th wheel (30'). I went from a 2011 to a 2019 F-250. The '19 sits much higher than the '11 did, yet when I hooked up the first time, it sits perfectly level. The whole truck and trailer looks great. I am at a loss to understand it. I have not actually towed yet, but I am looking forward to seeing how it does without airbags. Both of my previous trucks needed the airbags to help the squat and ride. Here's a picture of my truck all hooked up.

I have a 2018 F-350 and I tow a Sabre 36QBOK-7 and it rides level and I've not done a thing to the truck. It pulls the camper fantastic.

When I bought our 2018 F250, I found that I could not make our 5th wheel work with it. We wound up buying a new one that sits a good 3" higher than the old one.

the old one was 58" to the bottom of the pinbox mount. The new one is 61". When your trailer is level, check that measurement.

If your F250 is 4x4 then you might be a little tall for 31ft 5er towing. Easy fix is to install Correct Track axle alignment from eTrailer.com to raise the camper 2 inches. Additionally you might be able to drop the pinbox then you should be spot on with your height and bed clearance. Keep us posted on your progress.

After measuring the truck bed height (trailer disconnected) from where the wheel touches the ground to the top of the bed my old truck 2005 GMC 2500HD measures 54" while the 2017 F250 measure 59", quit a difference, has anyone had this happened when you purchased a new truck and had any issues.

I can tell you that my truck is about the same additional height difference compared to my '11 F-250. As I said above, I can't explain how my 5th wheel sits so perfect on my new truck. But it does.

EdJunior...when you connected you trailer to the new truck does the truck squat down an amount that makes it look OK.

Yes, the squat levels it out. It rides a bit high in the rear. The dealer offered me a "leveling" kit to level it, but I told him I have a 5th wheel to do that. Looks like I was right more than I thought. But I do still need to see how it actually rides. These concrete roads around here will be a good test.

What size bed do you have, and what kind of hitch did you go with?

snipe, have you bought the new F-250 already? Your signature says you have the 2005 GMC Sierra.

Yes in the process of purchasing the 2017 F250 4x4 Lariat diesel short bed, my current truck is a 2005 GMC 2500HD diesel with a shortbed and installed with a 16K Draw-tite hitch with a slider. Would be moving that hitch assembly over to the new truck and probably raise the hitch a notch as the bed depth is higher as it is with many of the new trucks over the past few years. Hoping the newer truck and trailer will work good together. Trailer has 16" tires.

OK. If you haven’t bought it yet, and you want to go with a diesel, then I strongly recommend you go to the F-350 because that heavy diesel engine eats up too much payload on the 3/4 ton. If your budget permits obviously.

I have a regular (short) bed. I have a Curt Q20 slider from my previous truck. It's a big, heavy thing, but it has not been a problem in 8 years of towing with it. And I have never had to use the slider yet. I have a couple of times, just to see if it still worked! And glad I did...it was pretty sticky once. But it all works great. It usually stays in my truck. Especially now since the truck sits so much higher.

I thought I was going to have to adjust my hitch also, but I did nothing to it at all. And as you can see, it sits perfect. For comparison, here is a picture of my 2011. It actually sits higher from the bedrails (as I look at it now...never paid attention to it before). So, I don't know if this helps you any, or gives you more to think about!!

Thanks for checking EDJunior, the one I am getting is a bit under 59", doesn't appear that the truck was used to tow a trailer and was used as a daily driver so probably has not had any appreciable weight in the back to exercise the rear suspension much, over time they will settle a bit is what I read. They are tall but hope when I eventually get the trailer hooked up the rear will squat enough so it will be acceptable for travel. Also thought that if I want to have it squat a bit more that I could fill the fresh water tank which is near the front an amount to get things looking better, observing overall weight of course. We will see. Its cold up here as I live on the east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia. Cheers!

No worries snipe. Yeah, I expect it's a wee bit colder there. Anyway, it seems mine squats just enough to level it out to what you see in the pictures. Remember also that mine has the camper package, which adds an extra leaf to the suspension. So the squat is just a little over 2 inches. But it's enough for mine.

Also, mine may be a bit over 58", since I just did the eyeball thing with my tape measure and it was dark. And my eyes are shot. And...well, you get the picture. Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted.
