Not sure how 'common' it is but my last 6-7 R/Vs all had a way for cable in the bedroom whether it was via the wall plate antenna selector or via a jumper to go to the bedroom at that main tv location.
If you have the powered antenna wall plate it actually does several things...
1. Supplies power to the rooftop antenna amplifier and that power needs to be turned off for cable to work.
2. It is a splitter of sorts and allows the antenna AND the cable connection to combine into the back side and come out the front as one coax. It also allows those same connections to be routed to a bedroom tv via a connector on the back side of the wall plate.
3. It is a selector switch. (electronic) When the booster switch is on, it selects the antenna coax and when it is off, it selects the cable input. This switching function also relates to the other connection on the backside that goes to the bedroom tv.
Also, there have been many reports here of coax improperly attached to splitters and poor coax connections. You may have to do some investigative work to locate a poor or improper connection.
