2018 MBS oil? what did factory utilize?

Hi,

My 2018 MBS Sunseeker 2400R is down 2 quarts of oil, but nowhere is it listed what type of oil was used by the factory in shipment. milage is 2500 miles , so not due for oil change. Thank you.

I assume is 2 quarts, as when scrolling thru the onboard computer reading it said engine oil level was 9.9 quarts. However , dip stick does not indicate it is that low, level is registering between the 2 lines.

Using 2 qts in 2500 miles could be considered excessive.
IMO, mixing oil brands is ok, oil is oil, add what the owners manual recommends.

Mercedes has a series of lubrication specifications and has a web site which shows which oils are approved for each of those specifications. Finding an acceptable oil is a two step process - first finding the specification number for your engine (presumably in the owners manual and, perhaps, on a label somewhere in the engine compartment), then looking that spec up on the MB web site to find the specifically approved oils.

All that being said, I think your spec is probably 229.51 (but I'm not sure) and the web site to see the list is here:
https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...229.51_en.html
And...all that being said...most FR MBS owners seem to be using one of the Mobil 1 ESP oils - there are several weights available. Note that Mobil 1 ESP oils are not so commonly available. You can get them mail order (or you can get a kit with oil, filter, etc.) NAPA seems to put them on sale a few times a year (which often gets reported here). Your local NAPA may not have them in stock but can probably get them in a day or two.

PS -

Down two quarts is WAY excessive. I've never seen the oil level down at all.

I edited my post to include that the computer is stating oil level is 9.9 quarts. When I use the dipstick, the level is between the 2 lines.

I'd trust the "DIP STICK" before trusting what the in-dash computer is telling you.

that's what I was thinking....however because the computer thinks the oil level is low, the check engine light is now on. ( or I am assuming that is why)

I believe the spec for the oil changed in either 2015 or 16 to 229.52 from the old 229.51

Napa puts the Mobil ESP 0w30 or 5w30 on sale a couple times a year for $5.99 or $5.79 from it's usual $9.99 price.

Here is the approved oil list.

https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...229.52_en.html

May be quickest to get 2 quarts at Mercedes or napa. Don't overfill, the level will go up and down during regeneration cycles, especially if you put in biodiesel. Also search the forums for a recent recommendation for a sprinter compatible code reader for that check engine light. It may just be the oil level now but when you are miles from home it will be invaluable someday.

Trust the dipstick. MB use Mobil 1 0W30 ESP X1 when they service. You can add any oil that meets MB Approved 229.52. There are other specs. that are approved like 229.51

Read the manual!

My second tow vehicle (for the 2010 17' Casita Spirit Deluxe fiberglass trailer I then owned) was a 2010 extended length, high roof 3500 MB Sprinter. The Owner's Manual was VERY specific as to EXACTLY what oils met MB's STRICT requirements. OVER TWENTY brands were listed in the Owner's Manual, NONE of which could be found in ANY "auto parts store" or truck stop. Even the Mobil-1 was some exotic formulation that was DIFFERENT from ANY Mobil-1 that was locally available. Should you have a failure and expect warranty service, expect MB to do a VERY THOROUGH lab analysis of the oil you've been using (wrong parts, fluids may = VOIDED warranty). I simply brought my Sprinter to a Mercedes Benz dealership and paid a bit more to insure that genuine MB parts and fluids were in fact being used. I was able to find "Pentosin" oil online (I think at sprinterparts.com). At that time, Pentosin was one of the approved oils. At a MB dealer, I purchased a set of filters so that, should the need arise, I'd have the proper parts and fluids if there was not a MB dealer nearby. All in all, I spent a few hundred dollars / year more by going to a MB dealer but, I had the peace of mind knowing that service was done according to MB.

Luvlabs is correct - spec was upgraded to 229.52, but the 229.51 will work also. Amazon sells the MB brand and Mobil One brands for about $50 a case for 6 qts.

As I recall, when resetting the maintenance mileage after changing the oil, if you used 229.51, it gets reset to 10k miles. If you used 229.52, it gets reset to 20k miles. Of course, you are the one telling it what you used

Napa puts the oil on sale a few times a year for under $6 each.

I am going back to the loss of 2 quarts at that low mileage. I just turned 7500 miles on my sprinter and have not burned a lick.

Forget about what kind of oil, go find out why you are losing oil.

Too many shiny objects in this forum distract from the real issue - eventually this thread will turn into a discussion about the best way to make a grilled cheese.

FIND YOUR OIL LEAK PROBLEM - THAT'S WAY TOO MUCH LOSS!

I was told as long as the oil was Gulf based it didn’t matter...as long as you didn’t swap for Pennsylvania based crude... he went on to say that there hadn’t been any oil from Pennsylvania in years(but that was 25 years ago).

I would not mix synthetic oils.

I have been told by Schaffer’s and Royal Purple you can mix any conventional oil with their products.

As far as I know, the MBS 229.52 standard Mobil 1 ESP does not come in a 5 qt jug.

My apologies. I assumed Mobil Ext Per was ESP. You know what happens when I you do that.

I have a 2016 3500 chassis and it had used about 2 quarts when I got the first “Service A” at 8000 miles. I’m now at 18000 miles and it hasn’t used any that I can tell.
