Autoformer comments

Sorry- within this sub-forum the only posts regarding the Autoformer are too old to post a reply to so starting new.

I'm considering the Autoformer all-in-one booster/surge protector; expensive but many of the systems in my coach - monitor panel, slide and awning controls and more - are digital. Bad juice could be really costly and inconvenient.

I don't expect to have time to get it hardwired in for awhile so am wondering if it is weatherproof so I can hook between RV cord (coach connection is on the outside) and pedestal. I'd appreciate any other thoughts/experiences users have had with this device.

Though you have a Forester, the Autoformer is not propriety.

It’s supposed to be fairly water resistant. I try to make sure it’s sitting under rig to further weather “proof” it.

So far so good.

I went on the Hughes Autoformer site and watched a video where is says it is NOT weather proof. They showed placing it on top of something like a brick or block of wood to get it off the ground, and then covered it with a plastic trash can. Said the 30 amp would fit under a 5 gallon bucket. You can also mount it inside a storage compartment of your RV to get it out of site and the rain. These are super pricey but with all the fancy wiring in our new rig I think its worth doing. Never even gave it a thought when I had my old MH or our present TT. Just plugged in and ignorantly went our merry way and never had an issue. But waaay too much fancy stuff in our (soon to be) new rig to take the chance!

If you can find a Frank's Electronics Autotransformer on eBay (He passed away and as far as I know, no one has restarted his business), you will not do better.

Mounting it inside will create heat take this into consideration where you mount it and possible overheating.

It’s not water proof but mine has served me well in rain where the system was off the ground on a 2X just too keep the water from pooling.

I have one of the new Hughes 50 amp units with the built in surge protection. I place it on a jack pad under one of my slides locked to a landing leg.

I'm using Progressive EMS-PT30X 30 Amp EMS with Surge Protection and it's water proof. I don't know how different from other but it seems to works fine even I've plugged in to 50 amp outlet at State parks.
