Filling Sprinter DEF tank in freezing weather

Winterizing and getting ready for the trip to warmer climates in January. Topped off the DEF tank and then wondering if this decision may expand and crack the tank. Couldn't find anything in the manual. Siphon some out or not??

In the Cummins info above it says tanks are designed to expand. Can't find any info specifically about the Sprinter but they all must have to meet a standard.

Think of all of the tractor trailers running all winter. Should be fine.

That's why we head south in January. We alternate between the Arizona to Texas and Florida to Texas route. Usually 1-3 days in a spot and one time 4 weeks in Texas. Like to keep moving. Have always taken a 5th wheel in the past. We think the MBS will be good for our mobile lifestyle.

The DEF will freeze, the tank expand, and when the engine is cranked the tank heater will thaw it all out prior to the Bluetec system using any of it in the emissions system. Sensors, computer programming, etc!

Definitely "not my daddy's diesel". Doesn't smoke like his did either!

There is a sensor in your def tank that activates when fluid is at freezing. I had a check engine light come on while traveling cross country this past summer. Stopped at MB dealership in Knoxville and was told it was the sensor and I would be okay to drive it home which is CA, but avoid driving where the temperature is below 32. I was told it is a common problem and my 2012 solera is covered under warranty. I just had it replaced a couple weeks ago at no charge and the dealership gave me a loaner car for the day, a 2016 c-class which was awesome. I was told that warranty on emissions 8 yr/100k or there about. Just wanted to share the story and the relief of not having to pay.

DEF freezes about 15 degrees. There should be a DEF warmer. EPA mandates the def should be flowing within 70 minutes of startup. I personally would have filled itbin the spring. Sent tipsy from mobile....
