Grey tank treatment
Another newbie question - can you treat grey tank with household bleach for odor? I know there is special product for this purpose but I'm just curious.

I would not recommend it.
I have not had a problem with gray tank odor but if I did I would just use the stuff for the black tank.

Is bleach harmful? It kills microbial which is the cause of odor I suppose?

I understand undiluted bleach is hard in the plastic tanks.
1/4 cup per 15 gallons of water is considered safe.

Bleach may harm the valve seals. I personally have taken a liking to Odoban that is available from Home Depot and Sams Club. I got tired of Eucalyptus and am now using lavender or their lemon scent.
Odoban is incredible and it what I use on pet odors in my basement....my dogs are spoiled and when it is snowing or raining outside, they will urinate on the unfinished concrete floor. This stuff works awesome in disinfecting and elminating ANY odor!
Another example, our new "used" fifth wheel had mouse infestation in the heating system. The heater and the ducting were full or urine and the solid waste product of the animal's digestive tract. I removed the heater and sprayed and rinsed the heater with odoban and then flooded the duct work with odoban and used a wet dry vac to suck it out of the low point and my heating system smells better than new!
This stuff works and a little splash will take care of grey water and black water smells. I spray a bit in the toilet bowl too which helps greatly.

We just pour some pinesol in, but honesty we usually dont have a problem. We have probably noticed an odor maybe 3 or 4 times in the past 4 camping seasons.
Other than when we found our new camper didnt have a tank vent installed correctly on our outside kitchen

Odorban works great in the wash too. My son used to use it on his sweaty clothes after a long bike trip, and occasionally on work clothes.

Ditto Ditto-Great stuff. Has been using it for years. Kills every kind of odors, is anti-microbial and a good mold killer.
I add nothing to my gray tanks.

Yep, odoban is incredible for removing mold and mold smell from laundry that wasn't put in the dryer in a timely manner.

30 years of RV travel and I have never used any additive in the grey or black tanks. Just occasionally flush the blackwater tank.

Ok I'll keep Odoban around just in case.
I don't get how the diluted bleach can harm the system. Don't we use it to sanitize the fresh water tank?

Yes use chlorine for sanitizing but it is a small amount. Bleach is Chlorine and Caustic. Can damage the rubber seals on your valves. Next time you are in a big box store look up the parts section for toilets and read the info. Many will say not to use Chlorine bleach in the water tank because it can damage those parts.

Also check your undersink one-way vents on your greywater plumbing.
Both mine were loose and you could smell the grey tank at times.

If the vent and air admittance valves are working, there will be NO oder.....

Nowhere near as much experience but I'm with you. Sink and shower drains to gray tanks have P traps. The toilet is fully sealed except for a "Mississippi-one" moment (if even that) while flushing. If any black tank odor sneaks in, it's due to running the exhaust fan while flushing which can be avoided by running it before and/or after, if that is even a problem.
