That looks like a good fix... I shall look for the holes to patch over as well.
I got tired of the exhaust fan having only 'off or on'...so I installed a speed selector switch so it doesn't sound like a small plane ready for take off while running.
It doesn't take much to open the outside flapper and on a lower speed setting it still directs the steam from a boiling pot outside....Bonus.. it is a lot quieter.
PS... while using the 'exhaust fan' be sure there is a window or a vent open (slightly) to allow air in to create the required draft .
