I decided to open the transmission drain to evaluate the fluid at 29900 miles and here are the pictures. I was ready with 8 liters of Fuchs 4134, a sprinter dipstick, spare transmission cap lock pins, and a 1200 ml measuring cup. The fluid level was normal. As you can see this fluid is spent. Brown , mild burned smell. Can't see thru at 1 inch. 2300 ml came out without dropping pan. Replaced thru dipstick hole, drove 17 miles and drained again since I had plenty of fluid. 2500 ml out pink brown and could just see thru at 1 inch. ( no picture, the red one is fresh fluid). Replaced the 2500 ml . Transmission this season had seemed a little abrupt at times but otherwise no problems. Now shifting smooth like a mercedes . I may do one more exchange this summer with the left over fluid and plan on the full pan drop and filter at 40000. The 60000 recommended change is way too long . I would strongly recommend trans service / fluid change at 30000-35000 miles based on my and mlmay12 posts.

Where did the 60,000 mile change come from? My manual (2013) states fluid and filter at 40,000 miles.

The 2014 model year went to 15000 mile oil change and transmission service at 4 th oil change. For those who go "by the book" that would be at 60,000. I don't agree with either of those intervals.

Kind of on the same page with you. Mine is on 10,000 miles for oil; I do at 8,000 because I tow a small car. Will also change earlier if it will fall do during a trip. Agree on tranny.

My 2016 Prism is at 20k oil change intervals. I changed it the 1st time at 5500 and I'll change it again when I get home in about a week at about 14,500. I Plan on scheduling the recall and the A service, minus oil change when I am in WA this summer and will have about 15,000 miles on it. I do very little driving in town and stop n go.

My Maintenance Schedule says transmission oil and filter change at 60,000 miles or 3 years since last replacement. On my 2016 it also had the engine oil and filter at 20,000 miles. For a vehicle of this weight and dimensions often towing something behind it, that duration is ridiculous. I am doing my engine oil at 10,000 miles or 1 year. Transmission oil and filter will be 25,000 miles or 3 years. I also will do the fuel filter every year. I plan on this being around for a while

Thanks for sharing the pictures and info Rich M. Same color and smell I got.

I don't suppose you saved any of the first fluid you drained? It might be interesting to send it for analysis...

No didn't save it. Dave have you had your transmission serviced? You have the same year coach.

Well...no. Actually, I sold the coach a bit ago and now I just lurk here!

I am confused on the correct fuel filter to get a NAPA for the 2017 2401R. There are several types. I am not a position right now to pull my current and check the number on the side. Any info would be appreciated.

Not sure if you can get the fuel filter through NAPA, I got mine through Europarts online. PN was 642 090 64 52, MB dealer PN was 607-090-12-52, just make sure it has the 5-pin moisture sensor.

Also be sure to change the Turbocharger Seal Ring.

You can also get the genuine MB filter on Amazon.

NAPA can tell you which one, and also napaonline.com will match parts to your specific vehicle. Look under MB Sprinter 3500 V6 diesel.

You say it’s a 2017 Forester but make sure you know which year Sprinter it is (ours is a 2016 Forester with a 2015 Sprinter chassis because it was built and sold in 2015). It may not make a difference but it might.

A good source for fuel filter

I tried fuel filters from the standard places like Autozone and O'Reilly and found they were missing the electronics and they couldn't figure out how I was supposed to get them. I ended getting what I needed at AutohausAZ.com for about half the price I could find anywhere else - $72 - and it was the same brand. I did have issues with the exact part number - I couldn't match the exact number that was on the old filter but the one they sent was exactly the same on the outside and worked fine.

Last one I purchased was a Mann 5 pin from an online filter supplier for $65.00. Best deal I have found.
