MBS Schedule A / B Services

I am fairly curious as to what people have experienced regarding what was actually done and what it cost vs what the schedule A and B services stay as what needs to be performed. In talking with different owners, it seems what is performed often surpasses what is really needed and the fees increase accordingly. I spoke with a service person earlier and asked about the fee for a Schedule B service and was told around $450. But, I have seen comments from people on forums where the actual billings they paid often exceeded $1000. Here is what MB says a schedule A service includes:

[B][I]Mercedes-Benz Service B* is a group of car services performed at either 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever marker comes first. Additional maintenance tasks may vary depending on your specific Mercedes-Benz model, but all models will receive the following upon coming in for Service B:

Synthetic Motor Oil Replacement
Oil Filter Replacement
All fluid level checks and corrections are dependent on factory-recommended service intervals for your vehicle’s year and model
Tire inflation check and correction
Brake component inspection
Reset maintenance counter
Cabin dust/combination filter replacement
Brake fluid exchange
Adhere to all required elements listed by model year and specific model as indicated on the corresponding service sheet for Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Systems in the USA.

SCHEDULE SERVICE

Service A vs. Service B
Service A, another group of services offered at your Mercedes-Benz service department, is performed before Service B. When you see a single wrench pop up on your main console, it’s time to come in for Service A. This feature is a part of the Mercedes-Benz Flex Schedule system that alerts you when your vehicle needs maintenance. Service B, on the other hand, is indicated with two wrench icons. Service B is a little more comprehensive than Service A, and includes a brake fluid change and cabin air filter change. For any questions relating to Service A or B, contact Mercedes-Benz of San Diego near Rancho Santa Fe! Our team is happy to help you understand the key differences.

On our 2012 MBS, every 10K miles for oil and oil filter (plus miscellaneous), fuel filter every other oil change (every 20K miles). Fuel filter adds significant dollars. Also, important fuel filter be replaced correctly- local shop “qualified for job” (but not Mercedes) caused a turbo failure on mine (improperly installed turbo compensator ring at fuel filter change).

Periodically should add brake system flush and radiator antifreeze change. Dealer seems to do the brakes regularly; has not yet done the antifreeze.

Think there is a diesel particulate filter test at about 100 K miles. Mine was tested at about 90K miles after a check engine / limp mode instance resulting in EGR valve and EGR cooler replacement. Dealer did a forced DPF regen at that point.

I think transmission fluid change should also come up - my dealer did not do a transmission fluid change; I ended up replacing the transmission at about 93K miles.

FYI - watch what is done or not done; delayed or missed maintenance can be quite costly on these Sprinters.

AS the MB dealer may not have the required new ring in stock , ask to see it before a fuel filter is changed , and demand the old one after the service is done.

I just had the B service performed at the 2 year mark and 13k miles. The main difference between the A service and the B is the fuel filter change, but there are several other areas checked more than the A.

My MB dealer charges $199 for A service and $699 for B service. I received a $300 off coupon in the mail shortly before the two year mark, so I got the B service for $399 which I thought was a deal. Just the fuel filter part was $138 on the detail bill.

My MB dealer in Boerne, TX is exceptional and I would not go anywhere else. My service advisor did tell me the #1 cause of roadside towing was a clogged fuel filter. He recommended every 2 years or 20k miles.

My 2016 Isata 3FW first "A" Service was at one year (11,000 miles). The dealer changed the Oil/Filter and replaced the Fuel Filter. Cost was $700.

After that I did the second service at 2 years (21,000 miles). I did a ton of research and did that one myself at a cost of $250. Replaced the Oil & Filter as well as the Fuel Filter (including a new turbine seal, clamps and Collector Tube). It wasn't that hard and took about 3 hours. I got a really good deal on Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 at NAPA. A great place to get parts is online at europarts.

There is a lot of debate about how often the Fuel Filter should be changed even a difference in opinions between MB Dealers. The manual for my 2016 had a statement that said to do it at 20,000 miles which would be part of the A Service. Another place in the manual said to do it at a minimum of once per year. I followed this only because of the warranty and plan on doing it every 2 years regardless of miles from now on.

Because of the size and weight of these Vehicles I have monitored my Transmission Temperature with an Ultragauge Blue. I have found that it operates at 200 plus degrees and often as high as 225 degrees on hills and towing. Because of this I have elected to have the Transmission serviced at 25,000 miles next week and will take a good look at the fluid when I get it done, I will make a decision on the intervals after I get that done. I will get the first brake fluid change done at that time.

Mine is going in for the Takata Airbag recall that effects 2015-2017 Sprinters just like my 2005 Tundra and my 2016 Jeep Wrangler.

.
Let us know how the transmission fluid looks at your mileage. I am near 30,000 and considering changing the transmission fluid.

Will do, scheduling for next week depending on if they have the airbag parts.

Thanks to all for posting your information. It really gives a good insight as to what to expect. There also seems to be some variation, dealer to dealer on service cost.

I did the schedule A myself. My maintenance indicator came on at 5200 miles and 2 1/2 years of ownership. If you normally change the oil and filter in your own rigs, the sprinter is no different. Cost was around $95 for the oil and filter. The hardest part was reseting the maintenance indicator. I never did figure it out. The dealer ended up doing it for me when I took it in for the air bag recall.

Mobil One 0W-30 Oil Deal

Just came across a good deal on Mobil 1 ESP. Beginning today Summit Racing Online has cases of 6 Quarts for $39 per case minus a $12 Mfg rebate. Can buy up to 4 cases and get rebates. Purchases over $99 includes free shipping. I just bought 4 cases for $156 plus $12 tax minus the $48 rebate comes to 5.00 per quart. That almost takes care of my next two oil changes. Rebate is effective to 9/30/2019

Good price - NAPA usually has it on sale a couple times a year for $5.79 (no sales tax in Montana) Is that rebate just for purchase at Summit or is it a buy it anywhere M1 rebate? I'd love to get it for $5.79 AND a $12 rebate.

There is a large list of participating retailers at below link.

A little complicated.

I don't see NAPA or Summitracing on the rebate list. I have 14 qts at home now - will be looking to buy more on sale when I put that in next month when we get home.

Good Luck with the rebate.

Question - are you folks running the 5 - 30 or the 0 - 30 oil in you MBS? I looked at the links and all I saw was the 5 - 30. I generally do my own oil changes and have been running the 0 - 30.

I didn't see them either, I called Summit Racing and they said to contact Mobil 1 because they are supposed to be on there, Big help. I plan on getting my 4 cases then going after Summit Racing for my $48 Rebate. It would still be $7 per quart which is better than what I usually pay.

I run 0W-30 because that is what was listed. I would rather run 5W-40 in Southern CA but it costs more.

Same here - do my own changes and run the 0w30. MBS 229.52 spec. I'm not sure the 5w30 meets that spec.

I just called Mobil 1 rebate center and they said they do not list all the participating retailers and as long as it is not amazon.com it will qualify. So NAPA should be good also, but I haven't seen a discount through them for a couple years on the ESP. Might just be due to my location.
