MBS SPRINTER - Oil

Does anyone know what kind of oil is in the MBS Sprinter when shipped?
Is it synthetic? We have 8,000 miles and are about 1 qt low. What kind of oil should I add?
Thanks!

Synthetic Mobil 1 ESP 0W30. ESP is a must. MB approval. 229.52.

Thank you, Mike. We were concerned about adding synthetic oil if there was regular oil in the engine from the factory.

MB services all of their vehicles with Mobil 1 in the U.S.

You can mix dino oil and synthetics as long as they meet the spec. if needed.
I don't because I have this thing about oil.

Is that the new oil recommendation for the Sprinters? I heard they stopped make the Mobile 5W40 that was still recommended when I did my last oil change.

Yes that is the new oil recommended by MB. I switched to it my last oil change 6000 miles ago and it performs very well. No oil consumption increase and all is well.

The link CaptDan posted has lots of good info.

If you check Napa auto parts web site, they run sales of the oil for $5.99 a qt. frequently. Best price I have found. They usually don't have it )ESP 0W30) in the store, but will order it. 2 days normal for receipt. I will get 3 cases at a time.

Here is a really nice site that talks about oil. This particular link discusses mobil 1 esp 5w30 and the analysis of the oil after use. You need to read on the oil weights to fully understand the differrences between 5w and 0w. Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 on MY12 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD | Used Oil Analysis - Diesel | Bob Is The Oil Guy

My Sprinter manual (2010 3500 series) showed 21 different oils approved by Mercedes Benz. NONE of the approved brands can be found in "regular" stores (the Mobil 1 MB specifies is special and NOT what's sold locally). If you're near a MB dealer, stop in and buy a quart (or two). My Sprinter did not burn oil. I regularly went the 10,000 mile interval without the need to "top off". Was your Sprinter on level ground when you checked the oil level?

Took everyone's advice and read all about oils on links suggested. We have an appt. Thursday at a Mercedes dealer to do the first oil change. It wasn't necessary to top off the oil, so we're good.
We are away from our home dealer so we sure appreciate the good advice, concern and general information! Love this forum!

If your a do it your selfer, it is one of the easiest oil changes you will ever run across. And you will save a ton of money. Easily over $150 bucks. Just sayin'

There is a Mercedes Benz Club of America. I forget how much I paid but, every dealership I used gave me a 10% discount on parts and labor which more than offset the cost.
