I went NAPA today of course it is not on sale, but person at the counter trying to talk me out from buying Mobil 1 esp X1 0W-30 oil. He said was up to me not to void the warranty because Mercedes recommended 5W-30. Then he try to sell liqui moly 5W-30 top tec 4605. What do you think about the weight thingy?:co nfused:

Use whatever weight is recommended by the manufacturer. If you do not use the recommended weight and experience engine failure they will say you voided the warranty.

Just exactly which Mercedes spec does "liqui moly 5W-30 top tec 4605" meet? I don't see it on my MB lists, but it may have been added since I downloaded the lists.

I've saved edited copies of the MB 229.51 and 229.52 oils, removing the products which (I think) are not available in the US. Each of the remaining products falls into one of the following 4 weight ratings: 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, and 5W-40. Any one of them will presumably work. I'm in southern Arizona and haven't had any issues with the lightest weight - the Mobil 1 0W-30, and that's what my local MB dealer uses.

For Mobil 1 ESP X1 version, ONLY 0W-30 is approved.

For Mobil 1 ESP (non-X1),:
Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30
Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40
Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30

are all approved.

The NAPA dude was mistaken.

Did you see this? This guy is testing all kind of synthetic oils. I know engine mechanical parts don't work that way, but just to show between metal to metal. It shows the results clearly. I've watched 5 or 6 tests related to oil the could be used in my RV. I think "Total ineo mc3 5w30" looks very good.

Never seen only one weight of oil being the only recommendation for motor vehicle. Check the owner's manual. There should be a chart with weight recommendations by temperature and sometimes service duty (i.e what you use the vehicle for). Usually will have several recommended possible weights to use.

Similar to this:

Select the appropriate oil viscosity based on the lowest air temperature expected before your next oil change.

As long as I'm not in any where -40 degree than 5w30 is just fine on 2016 rig. Then again I don't know much about these things. I only know for sure when key in and no sound. Heeeeeeeeeeeelp

I take it that you're not driving an MB Sprinter? Mercedes doesn't just specify oil viscosity, they individually approve each lubrication product to be used with the Sprinter's diesel engine. As mentioned in a previous item on the list, their list of approved engine oils includes products with 4 different viscosity ratings ranging all the way from 0W-30 to 5W-40. Not a big range.

Dave,

No, not driving a sprinter but you just made my point. 4 is more than 1

I have a 2016 Sunseeker 2400R MBS. I just bought oil at a local Mercedes-Benz dealer and he told me that Mobil actually makes the Mercedes branded oil. No idea how accurate that is. The Mercedes oil is the latest spec for the diesel. About $7.80 per quart.

The simple solution is to purchase the Mobile 1,,, 0-40 oil that is marked for "imported cars" right on the container.

It meets the MB .3 requirement .

The difference in all the oils is MB attempting to have the exhaust system last the warranty period with lowest expense to them.

The engine lubrication on the old spec and new spec is about the same, the ash content (that might screw up the exhaust) is the change.

Just had an oil change at the Mercedes of Sarasota, they used Mercedes synthetic 5-30 this change, not the 0-30w. They chose the grade and I do prefer to go a little thicker. I think the 0 grade oils are sacrificing wear for mileage but that just my opinion.

We had our oil changed @ MB dealer and bought a quart to have on hand. It was $6+. I was shocked, I have no idea how much oil costs, I thought it would be $20 or something crazy.

NAPA puts the correct Mobil 1 oil on sale occasionally for $5.79/qt. My last oil change cost ~$92 for oil and filter.

Napa has Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W30 on sale now for $5.99qt.

BTW, best I can tell MB .3 does not meet the MB approved spec. of 228.51/229.31/229.51/229.52 for the OM642 series engine which is in my 2013 Sprinters. May be OK, but chart does not show it as approved. Just a point of interest.
