Oil time again.

I know MB was thrashing about for a while changing specs for its lube oil.

So I am wondering what todays requirements happen to be for our Sprinter 3500 diesel.

Mobil 1 ESP has been used at times as well a Euro Formula , any ideas what is recommended today?

I think the spec for the most recent engines is 229.52...maybe? Anyway, you need to check for the current recommendation for your engine (which should be in your owner's literature) and then look that spec up in this table:
https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...229.52_en.html
That link goes to a table which provides a listing of all of the oils (worldwide) that MB has approved as meeting the 229.52 specification. You can select other specifications (229.5, 229.51, etc.) from the drop down list at the top.

NAPA occasionally puts Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 on sale for $5.79 - it's a 229.52 spec oil.

229.51 vs .52

My 2015 MBS owners manual specified 229.51 oil. I know that MB has come out with the 229.52 for newer Sprinters, but my opinion is that the .51 oil is fine for chassis that originally specified .51.

My guess is that the spec is for lower viscosity oil for fuel mileage improvements vs. engine or emissions system longevity.

I am going to continue to use Amsoil 5W-40 European oil since it meets the 229.51 spec. Just an opinion.

As I recall, 229.51 has an OCI of 10k miles and 229.52 has an OCI of 20k miles. I change long before then anyway. I think the 229.52 spec came out in Sept. 2015.

Looks like ESP has been discontinued by Mobil. What is the new replacement?

Where are you seeing that? It's still available at WalMart and on Amazon.

Are you asking if Mobil is making a replacement? It seems that any 229.51 or 229.52 oil (depending on what year the engine is) would work.

Not on Napa's website anymore that I could find. I feel like Wally world and Amazon are just selling the rest of what they have.

I was reading another forum here too, a little confusing, but they said it has been discontinued.

I dunno...sure looks like Mobil still thinks it's around:
https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-esp
The "Available viscosity grades" charts at the bottom of the page show that both the 0W-30 and 5W-30 have the various MB approvals - 229.31, 229.51 and 229.52.

Thanks for the link! Interesting read.

Here's a link for all the 229.52 oils apporved by MB: (the Mobil 1 5w30 is still listed as of 1/27/2020)
