there is no advantage to filling a def tank for winter. Def can freeze that is why the system is provided with heaters. Def also has a shelf life that is the reason I don't mix new with old until the tank is almost empty.

One thing is... Is the DEF tank plastic or steel? if its steel, its always better to fill up the air space inside. Changes in temp will cause it to 'breathe' and moisture in the air can condense out and rust the steel.

DEF can only be stored in certain stainless steel or plastic tanks. Any water in the system will cause damage to the system. almost all vehicles are fitted with plastic tanks with the exception of some extreme off road or specialized construction vehicles. DEF is easily contaminated by the materials it touches thus the reason for only using plastic or stainless steel funnels when adding.
