Question for those who change their own oil

My 1st oil and filter change today at 8500 miles. Cost about $85 dollars when buying Mobil 1 ESP on sale for $6 a quart. Easier than changing oil on my car. My question: I noticed that there are a couple of ounces of oil at the bottom of the oil filter sump that doesn't drain. Is that normal? I took some rags and wiped the oil out.

Another question- I wasn't looking closely at the large O ring placement but I assume it is the larger groove which is 2nd from top. Just want to make sure I do things correctly on my 1st change.

Yes, residual oil is normal. As to the o ring, I recall just removing and replacing where I found the old one. That doesn't help you, since it appears you removed the original and can't remember which nurl it came from I assume. Is that what you're saying.

I quit using Mobil 1 ESP from Pep Boys, too costly. I switched to Delvac ESP 5w40 about 60,000 miles ago and oil analysis reports are good and DPF seems to be doing good. I save almost $4/quart with the Delvac ESP versus the Mobil 1 ESP. Delvac isn't MB certified but I no longer care. I change oil every 7500 miles and 90% of my driving is highway driving.

I have a 3.0L MB engine in an 07 Grand Cherokee.

NAPA occasionally has the Mobil One on sale for around $6 a quart. They don't carry the ESP in the store but it arrives in a couple of days. The filter is a Mann HU821X found on Amazon for $10. By a google search I found that the larger O ring goes in the 2nd from the top (largest) grove. Apparently many people put it in the top groove resulting in oil leaking. As far as oil capacity this forum and the Solera forum list varying amounts. My book says 3.3 US gallons so if my math is correct I calculate to 13 quarts and 6.4 ounces.

I read somewhere not to wipe the residual oil out of the filter housing. Don't ask me where. I wipe out mine and replace with fresh oil.

That might be so that the old oil is soak up by the new dry filter to prevent a collapse on the first start up after an oil change.
Had that issue on KTM motorcycles.
And yes I would wipe up old oil and soak new filter in clean oil, a little messy but doable once you get the knack for it.

I pulled the filter cover after I ran it just to check. Oil is back in the filter sump and the filter is in good shape.

On my 2007 3.0L mercedes benz turbo diesel, the factory specifies in a TSB that 1/2 of the oil must be poured down the oil canister filter assembly to prevent damage to the front bearings on the first start after an oil change.

I hope newer 3.0Ls have been improved so this isn't a rquirement anymore. It takes forever to pour 1/2 the oil down that way.

Hear that MB dealers recommends changing oil at least annually. Here is the straight scoop from The MB Sprinter (2013) maintenance documents.

Yeah, I can confirm the 2 year interval. First, I called MB after a bit more than a year and the rep said (more or less) "Don't change it until the computer tells you to." And then, a few days ago, with about 9,000 miles and 2 years on my Solera, the computer began counting down the days. I changed the oil, reset the computer and now, I guess, I'm good for another 15,000 or 2 years.

Dave

PS: I had an oil analysis done a few months and not too many miles ago. The analysis showed the oil was fine at the time.

Ok, so I have about 15 months and 15,700 miles on our Solera 24W. Should I wait to see the light? Just wondering. Thanks...

I've always followed the light / gauge on my recent vehicles. But I heard / believe they say OR at least once a year.

I changed mine yesterday with 5000 miles on it. I bought it new in January and it was shipped to the dealer in December. The chassis was built in April 2015. Who knows how many times it was started and stopped before it was warmed up. The filter looks like it may be spent by the way the pleats look. I'm glad I changed it. I'll be changing oil and filter once a year regardless of mileage unless it goes over 15k. I check the oil every time I fill up. Never has used any. The book says it will.

I cannot disagree - maybe I do the same after warranty expires but NOT before!
