hi everyone.

I'm in a pickle and need advice

need to backup MBS 2400W into a steep driveway, and we're hitting black pipe on driver side. ( tried to all kinds of ways .. ass first.. nose first.. different angles, etc)

I bought skid wheels the 6" class A ones.. they are sitting approx 2" below skid bars on the hitch .. still not enough by about 2 - 3 inches.

so we are now considering following options:

1) install spaces between hitch and skid wheels to add those few inches
2) install air bags. I have not experience with those.. may not even be a viable solution


basically I need to be able to lift rear of the RV by several inches to clear the steep driveway so rear wheels have a chance to make contact.

what about sumosprings.. I reading that people like them, but do they add height ?

I appreciate suggestions.

Sumo's won't add any height. I have a similar problem so I back in at a fairly obtuse angle getting one rear well on the driveway at a time, then straighten the RV as soon as the second well is on. That works for me, but your slope my be greater.

WOW, and I though my drive was steep being as I rise almost 30' in 250' and I don't drag there. I do drag the trailer hitch once in a while when pulling the trailer up into the back yard where we store the rig, but I can usually avoid that if I am careful.

Not sure if they make one or If you could make one yourself, but you may consider a roller (like the ones on a stand used to hold a board up when using a chop saw) mounted to the hitch receiver. Not sure it would work but is a thought.

BTW, let me know if you do find AIR SHOCKS designed to work with the MB Sprinter chassis. I haven't been able to find any MB Sprinter specific.

They sell and install a VB Air suspension system that is specifically designed for use on the Sprinter 3500 chassis.

Since you only need the lift while in your own drive ,

have you thought of creating a pair of wheels that are in an extension that could simply be plugged in to the existing trailer hitch.

This could lift just enough to allow the RV underside to clear.

Gong straight in would be least load on the unit.

We were surprised when we went to Mercedes Sprinter shop with our new Forester and they said they have never been asked to install airbags and therefore couldn't help me understand if they would help with what I call the School Bus feeling. I had hoped for more help from them.

Sumo's would help the bus feeling. Can a muffler shop maybe bring the pipe up a bit?

Used several 10x4 and 4x4. Made it work. I'm sure it looked hocky from outside . But got the job done.

Once we cleared the "worst" section, skid wheels kicked in

thanks everyone for ideas and replies.. i appreciate it .

so we were able to back our RV up the driveway with some help from wood planks i had lying around.

dropped off RV today to weld skid wheels to hitch .. but we will add a 3" spacer.. so they'll sit lower. based on our rough measurements it should be enough when backing up .

getting it back tomorrow ..
