There can be a couple of benefits.

First, if your "post office box" is really at a mail forwarding service (such as provided by Escapees) you can have them send your mail wherever you're staying (or going to be staying). This doesn't buy you much if you've got someone at home to forward things, but eliminates that requirement.

Second, if you're on the road most of the time - more than 6 months out of the year - you may be able to claim an arbitrary state as your legal "home address". This can be very handy if you happen to pick one of the popular states with low taxes and/or fees. I know fulltimers generally pick from a fairly small number - South Dakota, Texas, Florida, maybe Oregon or Wyoming - depending on their specific circumstances. As an example (if I recall correctly) South Dakota doesn't have a personal income tax and their vehicle registration fees are fairly low.

Anyway, I think those are the two main benefits, but there may be others.

If you are a fan of magazines using a fwding service is about the only way you can travel long term .

The USPO does not fwd magazines after 3 months or so.

FMCA , Escapees , and commercial services will, at your expense.

The USPS will forward mail for a year. A PO Box is secure from prying fingers of neighbors and such. As long as the rent is paid, mail will be kept in the box. If the box will not hold anymore mail, the mail is pulled and stored on a shelf behind the counter where the window clerk works. The box will be notified that there is overflow mail to be picked up(during office hours the window is open). If you have mail with tracking numbers on them; they can only be held for 15 days unless you fill out a hold card requesting more time for mail to be held. You can also use a temporary forward that can be cancelled whenever you want. General Delivery can be used but only for 30 days. The USPS also has a Premium Forwarding service. The specifics to that can be found on the USPS website.

The USPS will NOT forward magazines for a year. This is first hand knowledge.

We travel a lot, sometimes for a month. So we had all our mail forwarded to a Mail Service (similar to a UPS Store with mailboxes). Your address is not a PO Box, but is the PHYSICAL address of the store (which allows delivery of items not allowed to go to a PO Box), and the address second line is "PMB 1234" where PMB is private mail box.

They don't charge anything to hold our mail till we can get back home.

I changed our address, just as if we had moved, to the new address. But I did NOT change magazines (we have zero subscription magazines, these are all flyers, ads, catalogues, etc) address, and USPS stopped forwarding them at the 6 month time. They even sent us a card saying so.
