Pulling a 348A13 with a 2500HD

We have put a deposit on a 2019 348A13 and currently have a 2012 2500HD Crew Cab, 6.5’ bed, 6.0V8, 360 HP with axle gear ratio 4.10 which is rated for 13,900 tow at Fifth wheel. Is anyone pulling with the same system? Would you share your thoughts and opinions?

We plan on upgrading the truck at some point but wondered if we can get through a season or two comfortably before we do so.

Not enough truck.

If I looked up your trailer correctly the pin weight is near 3000. That alone is going to be over your payload. Look on the inside of the drivers door and there should be a sticker or placard that will tell you the payload for your truck.

Not necessarily. Here is the sticker from my 2004 2500HD extended cab, 8’ bed, 4x4 with the 6.0 and 4:10:

It may be upside down, but the payload is 3,885 pounds.

No way your truck can handle that Vengeance. You will be way over payload and the 348 when loaded is going to exceed the 13,900 tow weight number by just a couple thousand pounds.

The OP is using a 2500. Big difference. That sticker pix is a 3500.

With his truck the maximum payload available is just over 3000lbs for 4x4 add 300 more for 4x2...that is for a stripped down crew cab. According to Chevy...unless I missed something.

That trailer dry, with hitch and one human in the vehicle will only have a frogs hair margin left over...if it's a stripped work truck and they never put anything in the garage of the nice new toyhauler.

The payload is a a concern we addressed with the dealer. Our truck has a payload rating of 3,124 and the listed pin weight of the 348 is 2,718. The dealer was not at all concerned and explained that the Toy Haulers are front loaded and once you put stuff in the garage it reduces the pin weight.

We also did not get the generator (because we do not dry camp and didn’t feel we need it) and were told that removing that reduces the stated weights by about 400 lbs.

Oddly enough, we were at the MD RV show and not one of 4 different dealers that we talked to ever mentioned the payload. That is something we found online doing our own research.

We do realize we are pushing the limits and do not plan to pull this with the 2500 long term. Just wondering if we could get through a season or two safely.

OOPS! You’re right. I see the blue paint now. My 2500HD was silver. My 3500HD is blue.

I have pretty much the same truck as you. My Silverado 2500HD gasser (see signature) payload is 2906 lbs. A 3000 lb pin weight will obviously make it overweight.

With a GVWR of 16398, a 20% pin weight would be 3279 lbs. And that's before you load anything else in the truck.

I'd say you need a 1 ton diesel. And probably a dually.

Sir,

Most dealers don't know squat. Some will tell you anything you want to hear. The odds that yours is square is very small.

I have a toyhauler, its not a 5er but I heard the same thing about tongue weight...I weigh my tongue at every load and I've seen about 950 empty to 1500 loaded with a rear garage. I cannot tell you what will happen to your trailer loaded vs not but taking the dealer's word is not a bet that I would take.

You said yourself that you will be pushing the limits and are looking for ways to force things to work...not a good way to start.

You may be able to get your numbers so that it looks good on paper and I wish you luck but when you are trying to justify it by what someone with a vested interest (that is not your interest) is telling you...you are rolling the dice.

It's not enough truck IMO.

Yeah, you are confirming what our gut is telling us. Now we have to decide if we want to cancel the order and stick with our Keystone Sprinter or upgrade the truck. Thanks for the input.

That 2,718 pin weight number is dry pin weight or an empty trailer. You are going to be way over that number once you are loaded up ready to camp. And I mean WAAAY over.

RV dealers? Do you think they would tell you ANYTHING that jeopardize a sale? Ha Ha C'mon. Don't worry tho, a ton of people here on the forum will tell you what you want to hear. Just agree with them and move on.
