You can get lock boxes for the more expensive surge protectors.
We'll be leaving our camper plugged in because it's a pop-up with a power winch lift system. If the battery is dead, there's not going to be much of a trailer to use.

Asked for some tips in another post and one that immediately stood out was the EMS surge protector. No one at the dealer mentioned this to me, and I assume the previous owner did not install one. I am thinking I will get a plug in protector since I want to have it as soon as we plug in.
This got me thinking about a more general question (again, a newbie so I have lots of, I assume, basic questions.). When you leave your seasonal site for a few days or longer, do you unplug the power cord? I was thinking of this because I was wondering about the surge protector and that chances that someone would take it. Seems like we are at a nice place, but it did cross my mind.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Joe,
The PI EMS (portable) has a metal tab that allows you to lock it with a chain and pad lock to wherever you plug it in.
On my last trailer, I plugged in an extension cord to the pedestal and ran it to the EMS which was locked to the step frame. Plugged the trailer in under the trailer. Out of sight and the weather.

That's a good idea! As far as extension cords, is there a particular type I should be purchasing to do this?

For those interested I built a box to keep our portable PI unit out of the elements. I used treated wood, drilled some small holes for a little ventilation that I screened to keep bugs out. You can see the screened holes on the bottom of pic 2. There are a couple on the top of the side pieces too. I ran a cable lock thru some holes and the metal tab to secure the PI unit to the pedestal. After 9 years so far so good.
I'm pumped as we're going up this weekend to open up the camper for the season.

Scrapper . . . We are just up the road from you near Plainfield. Winding Creek is a seasonal only campground with great ownership. Enjoy the Wilderness for it is a nice campground.

We've been at Wilderness for 27 yrs in a tent and pup. Bought our first TT from a previous seasonal at there. We've been there continuous since 2004. Love the place and have a lot of friends there.

Our electric pedestal has holes in the cover and base unit for a lock. It locks our portable serge protection unit to the pedestal.
We leave ours plugged in until we close in fall. Fridge needs to keep the beer cold for when I arrive next time. Some people in our park have never disconnected their units. Ever.

What surge protector have you used? Looking to get Tech Research 44750, portable as it is not as expensive even tho' I don't need it to be portable.

Scrapper,
Nice looking site! Small world, we're just west of Montello at Kilby Lake Campground. This will be our 10th year. We drive right past Wilderness on our way up. Maybe we'll run into each other at Mike and Kathy's Gold Old Days for a fish fry.

A picture of my 'seasonal campsite'. Note the absence of any other RV's. Thats because I have 56 acres all to myself...
Just thought I'd share.
My 'access road' to my site too....

A Berk won't make it, well, it might with some collateral damage..lol, but a 5er will as will a TT.
Like mi sig line says, Enjoying my solitude. best part is, I'm 10 minutes from a Wally World and sit down eateries.
Have my own little world, devoid of other campers and their distractions. No kids,no dogs, no bright lights all night and no noise, unless I make it. Fishing is close by, good water and peace and quiet. I have to bring along my own power but that isn't an issue either.
I have a lifetime supply of firewood and forest animals for entertainment if necessary (hunting / fishing).
Cost was a bit more than a lifetime spot in a campground but my philosophy is, the Lord isn't making any more land so why not own a piece of it.....

I've been using my PI 30A portable for 3 years now and have never once covered it, even in heavy rain. Never had an issue. Is it necessary to cover them? I might just build something anyway, but I didn't think I really needed to. Thanks for the mod idea.
And from what I've found/read, just about every seasonal leaves their electric on all summer long.

Wiscampsin,
Sad to say I did not create the site, I took over from a family that was there for 17 yrs. before. I was in the site next to him for 3 yrs when they pulled his TT out because of health reasons. It had 2 wood slides opposite each other you pushed in and out by hand. It fell apart as soon as they started moving it. Both he and us had a good laugh that it hadn't fallen in while they were in it.
DW was talking about going to Gold Old Days some time this season.
SidecarFlip,
DW and I were looking at a lot like that last year. It has a steel shed big enough for 2 - 40ft TT's and a 12x14 living quarters with sleeping loft. 50 amp pedestal. I can't remember size of the lot or the price but it was more than we can afford.
I'm retired, DW is not.
