38RE Sleeps Six???

Question for 38RE owners:

While acquainting ourselves with our rig, we decided to open up the living room sofas. We just wanted to get an idea of how they might sleep should we get overnight guests. We discovered that both sofas can't be opened at the same time. Is this normal? We were under the impression that the rig could sleep six. Since the rig is new to us, did the previous owner swap out the furniture or are we doing something wrong/is there a trick to opening both sofas so they'll fit?

Thanks and I'm sure this won't be the last time we need help!!!

Larry & Sherry

I do not have your model, but may I suggest you post a couple pictures so the other folks that do can tell you if it is the same furniture they have?
I hope it is a simple solution.

No you are correct they come that way, both sofas open but it usually looks tight to get around when both are open. I think also some front living room are the same way.

Thank you for the suggestion! I guess that would have been helpful.

Here's our problem... No way to use both pull-out beds.

If I were you, I’d share these 3 pictures with Forest River and would ask them how it’s supposed to be done.

Makes me chuckle (not in a good way)... I was in a mid-bunk model and tried to open the sofa bed. Same thing- it hit a wall. The sales person was speechless.

We looked at one mid-bunk that the only way to fold down the sofa into a bed was to close the door. And then the only way out of the room was to first fold the sofa up. Not exactly an ideal setup for a room meant for kids.

Slider Adjustment?

I don't know if it is an illusion in the pictures, but it sure looks like the left side sofa is out further than the right side. I am looking at the relationship where the two sofa fronts meet the entertainment center. I wonder if it is possible the left slide compartment is not opening all the way, or is the left sofa mounted further away from the wall? I would take a tape measure and check the distance from the outside of the slider wall to the main wall on the outside and compare the two measurements of the left and right sliders. The left Schwintek slide may need to be adjusted. Sorry, we don't have our 38RE out of storage (4 hours away) yet to give you a measurement.

We checked our 38RE during the PDI and both couches opened properly, meaning they both rested on the floor. Not saying you could walk between the two, but they did fit when fully opened.

Keep us informed of what you find out. Good luck,
Noel

I'm with Millman. That one couch is front of the cabinet door. That's not how it should be. The two couches are not as far apart as they should be. Slides are not out far enough, something............

I see what you are saying with the pic I posted. However, I just checked and both slides appear to be out all the way. There is no more than a finger width between the wall and the slide on both sides of the slide. I went outside and measured the distance from outside wall to edge of slide and I get approximately 24.5 inches all the way around. Even if I could make up that finger width it wouldn't give me the six inches or so that I need. I checked each sofa and they are mounted flush against the slide. I'm baffled! I'll take a look at it tomorrow during the daylight to see if there may be something else that I'm missing.

Thanks for the suggestions and please keep them coming!

If the slides are out all the way, then you either have the wrong couch installed, or perhaps not mounted close enough to the wall. Just my opinion.

Larry & Sherry, we too have a 38RE and I just flipped both couches open - same thing, they overlap in the middle. Personally, I couldn't care less but I can see the problem if you really need the sleeping space.
We are actually planning on removing the couch on the door side and replacing it with a sideboard.

Thank you for that! I was about to think that I was just an idiot and couldn't figure out how to do it correctly!!!

It was never the idea that we would need both beds just that the 38RE is supposed to be able to sleep six. We're considering something similar to what you are planning and putting in a desk and office chair in the place of the door side sofa.

Thanks again!

I have seen very expensive MH where if both couches are folded out to make a bed, you can not get from one end to the other without climbing over them.

The front living Cedar Creek........flx or whatever model, I don't remember.......will make one huge big old honkin' bed with both couches out. I've seen it. I can't imagine that the Riverstone won't............. And yes, you'd have to crawl over the 'double bed arrangement' to get to the cabinet, but if you didn't have to, the slides would have to be a lot wider....... Looks like a teenage girl's 'sleepover' dream bed!!

BUT, I've looked closely at pictures of "For Sale" units and they seem to be in same position yours is.

this same issue came to light on one of the TV shows - the couple wanted all their kids up in the front area, but with both couches out, they overlapped.... the salesman had no comment.

I'm not sure why the factory just doesn't make one of them a jack-knife sofa.

Changes at the Factory?

We still don't have our 2018 1/2 38RE out of winter storage (too wet now), but I did look at the video taken of our rear entertainment area. It sure looks to me like the left hand sofa is further away from the curved door centerline compared to the OP picture (maybe just a few inches, but that's probably all that is needed). I know we opened both sofas during the PDI and they both rested on the floor. I wonder if the factory changed something between 2017 and 2018?

Another thought: is there any adjustment on the recline linkage that may provide a different footprint?

When a camper says it can sleep x number of people, that's with every conceivable sleeping surface used. My camper supposedly sleeps 9 but anymore than 5 people and we'd be tripping over each other.

2018 1/2 Changes???

Okay, we finally got our 2018 1/2 38RE home from winter storage (although we christened it with two inches of snow the night we came home).

I wanted to confirm that either the factory has made changes in the newer 38RE, or there is something different with the tri-fold sofas, or the amount the slides move out, or.....?????

Here are the pictures to prove the new 38RE does not have the issues with interference of the two tri-fold sofas when they are made into beds:

We just picked ours up yesterday, both front couches open all of the way like Millman's.
