Towing capability

Hello, Iím a newbie.....

Iím getting ready to buy a NoBo 19.5. GVW 5,00ish#s......

Iím planning on pulling it with a 2010 Tacoma....6 cylinder VIN # seems to indicate it has the Ďtow packageí.......

Any thoughts/input on this coupling is appreciated. Ya, I know an F150/Ram/Silverado, et. al., would be better, but itís what I have for now...

Greg

What the payload (Cargo Carrying Capacity) on your drivers side door sticker say. Googling "2010 Tacoma Payload" comes back with a 775 lb range from 910 to 1,685 lbs.

The tacoma will struggle with 5000 pounds behind it. Im sure someone will say it will be “fine.” But “good” is preferred. It all depends on the terrain you plan to tow over. I tow 5000 ish pounds with a 2017 GMC Sierra over 12000 feet in the rockies. It works but you feel it behind the truck.

I see a 6500 pound towing capacity on the 2010 Tacoma. So while 5000 is under that, it is also a large percentage of your max. With little room for error.

Thanks for the feedback. Pretty much what I suspected.

I had a 2009 Tacoma with the V6, pulling my 19.5 and it was good, with no issue. Lots of power. Loved that truck and it pulled the 19.5 really well.

Like a big dummy I sold that Tacoma and bought a new 2018. They regeared the tranny or rear-end (or both) and it was awful pulling that trailer. It could handle the weight no problem but the wind resistance meant that I was at 3,500 rpm going down the freeway and I could barely have a conversation with my passenger as it was so loud. I did not pass too many gas stations, either.

So I sold the 2018 and bought an F-150, mostly because my wife is a saint and was tired of me complaining.

But long story short, you will be 'fine' in the 2010, and it pulled the trailer really 'good'.

In addition to tow weight limit and payload limit, research whether or not the Tacoma has a limit on the frontal surface area of whatever it tows. Towing a travel trailer is like pulling a parachute. Serious drag. Your truck may be able to tow 6000 pounds but 6000 pounds of steel on a flat bed is a lot different than a 6000 pound travel trailer with an 8 x 8 panel at the front end.
