Furnace use

Have a ? about furnace when I turn the gas on is it normal to turn the stove on to get the lines primed. This is the first time I will be using the furnace

Also expect the furnace to give off some odor and possible light smoke as it burns off the oils used during manufacturing.
The smoke alarm has been known to go off on 1st furnace fire up.
